That evening had been a strange one. The second (Y/n) walked in she could feel the coldness of the atmosphere around her.

Ronan had locked himself away in his room and was refusing to come out- especially not on (Y/n)'s account.

Carmen looked over to (Y/n) and sighed. "What's happening with you?"

"I'm really sorry-"

"Getting high? Kissing your brother's girlfriend? If you're feeling upset or anxious then please come and talk to me, you don't need to act out." Her mother said calmly. "Ronan, as expected, is devastated. You should talk to him."

(Y/n) took a deep breath. "I really regret it. I wasn't thinking properly."

"I know, sweetheart. Ronan told me what Padgett said."

"I just want to make sure the situation wasn't misrepresented." (Y/n) winced. "I didn't even kiss her back the first time."

"She said that." Carmen replied. "You should have said something as soon as it happened."

"I wanted to, I really did. I've never felt so guilty in my life but everyone who I spoke to just told me to keep quiet."

"Would you please speak to your brother?" Carmen requested again.

(Y/n) felt like she was walking the plank as she approached Ronan's room. Her hand was shaky as she knocked at the door.

"Ronan, it's me."

"Go away. I don't want to talk to you." He fired back from beyond the wooden door.

"Please-"

"I don't care if you're sorry. I just want to be alone."

(Y/n) leaned on the wall next to the door. There was really no way for her to get through to him, she felt like crying. She knew this would happen, there was no real way to prevent it.

The next day at school, (Y/n) was watching Padgett throughout the classes they shared.

She seemed completely fine, worlds away from the crying mess (Y/n) had found in the bathroom stall the day before.

Gianni was back in school and she was to meet him for lunch after this class but she intended to check in on Padgett before she met him.

He would be disappointed that (Y/n) was still associating herself with his ex girlfriend but (Y/n) couldn't help it if the situation involved her.

The bell rang and (Y/n) shot over to Padgett's desk.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"Uhhh, yeah?" Padgett gathered her stuff together.

"You know, with everything that-"

"I'm over it." Padgett said curtly.

"You're- ...what?"

"Over it. Over him. Over everything." Padgett answered. "I was actually meaning to talk to you."

"What about?" (Y/n) was praying that Padgett didn't ask her for drugs yet again.

"My birthday is coming up this Saturday. I'm having some friends over in the evening. Do you want to come?" Padgett tried to sound as unbothered as possible but in reality she had been working up the confidence to invite (Y/n) for most of the week.

"I'd really like to. I don't know if my mom would love for me to go, you know... with everything. But I'll come if I can."

"Yeah, I don't really care. I'm just doing you a favor." Padgett flicked part of her hair over her shoulder. "Show up or don't. Makes no difference."

(Y/n) nodded slowly and watched Padgett leave before exiting herself to go to the rooftop.

"You feeling better?" (Y/n) sat down next to Gianni after not having seen him for two days.

He was honestly just so happy to see (Y/n) again. "Yep, a lot better."

"That's good." She began to unpack her lunch. "Anything new?"

"Nah, being sick is pretty boring." He said, and took out his own. "What about you?"

"My mom and brother hate me, so that's new."

Gianni suddenly became overwhelmed with concern, alarm bells went off in his head. What had he done? His selfish decision to stay home meant that he couldn't look out for (Y/n) and now something bad had happened.

"Why?" His voice was strained as he asked.

"Well, hate is a strong word. My mom doesn't hate me but Ronan definitely does." (Y/n) continued.

"Why?" Gianni asked again, louder this time.

"Padgett called Ronan yesterday and told him what happened. He broke up with her, I know he'll get over it eventually but he's very raw at the moment and isn't really willing to hear me out. I can't blame him." (Y/n) looked out at the town ahead of them thoughtfully. "I brought this upon myself."

"I... that really sucks." He didn't know what she wanted to hear. In all honesty, Gianni was pleased with what went down. Padgett would no longer have a reason to be hanging around (Y/n)'s house all the time.

"At least I don't have to see them for half the weekend. I'm seeing my dad on Saturday morning and then I'm going to Padgett's house for the her birthday in the evening."

Gianni froze. "Sorry, you're doing what?"

"I know, I know, I need to cut back on the time I spend with my dad. He's a dick and-"

"Not that. Padgett. I thought I told you to stay away from her." It was clear he was getting angry now, he was scowling down at her while (Y/n) just felt confused at this sudden change in attitude.

"She just invited me. We have a lot of mutual friends, I figured it could be some fun." She defended.

"Let me guess: she's getting you to bring the ecstacy." He sneered.

(Y/n) rolled her eyes. "No. I'm not bringing or doing any drugs."

"I can't believe you, she cheated on me and your brother and you can just go around acting all friendly with her." Gianni folded his arms and turned away from (Y/n).

"She's really upset about the break up. She's not showing it but I can tell that it's all bottled up. I just want to help her out." (Y/n) sighed out. "This isn't me choosing her over you or anything. You're still my best friend."

Even while mad at (Y/n), he couldn't stop the flutter in his heart when he called her the 'best', even if she was friend zoning him in a major way.

"You're not going to that party." He stated.

"You don't control what I do." She wasn't going to take this sort of shit from Gianni. "She needs support right now."

"She's evil!"

"I think forgiveness is an important quality. I forgave you." (Y/n) pointed out.

"That's different." He turned back around to face her.

"How?" (Y/n) challenged.

"Because I apologised, she's not sorry for what she did." He cried out. "She's going to hurt you, (Y/n), I won't let that happen!"

"..." (Y/n) looked down into her lap. She hated to admit that he was making sense as her pride wouldn't allow it. "She's hurt me in the past. But... I don't want to cling to that. I want to be able to forgive her."

Gianni could hear the sadness in her tone and he hated to be the cause of it. "You can go on one condition."

"And what's that?"

"I go with you."

(Y/n) let out a dry laugh. "You're joking, right? She didn't invite you."

"Then you're not going." He shrugged.

"Fine, fine. I'll see if I can get you in but don't bank on it." She said with a small smile.

Gianni was just relieved that she was smiling again.
