Chapter summary: five years after you and Steve had broken up , your relationship or what's left is simply routine.

I was sitting in the driver seat of my car, tapping on my steering wheel above my radio which was currently playing whatever was on at nine in the morning. Where was I so early on a Monday morning you ask, I was sitting in front of my ex-boyfriend apartment building why you ask, that’s one long story.

The short version is shortly after Steve and I broke up in our sophomore year of high school. I found out I was pregnant, and after giving our relationship or what was left a second try , three months after our son Jackson was born. We broke up again saying we're better off separate then together, but for Jackson sake we decided to have a very civil and friend like relationship and co-parent. Which had turned out somewhat better then I thought it would after waiting almost half an hour, since I always got there early, I made my way up to his apartment. Standing in front of the door, I could barely keep my excitement, I'll always missed Jackson when he was gone. Even though I knew he was in good hands, at first it took me awhile to feel comfortable leaving him with Steve , since the first time I did Jackson added the words "Shit" and "damn" to his growing vocabulary. The second time I left him with Steve, he came home with a bump on his forehead from walking into the dining room table and last before that I had finally felt comfortable leaving him leave Steve lost count of how many cookies he had. It felt like so much time had passed, it felt like overnight Jackson had grown from a small baby I will create on my arms to an energetic and full of life kid he had my hair color and Steve beautiful eyes that I had fallen in love with all that time ago, and still was. I knocked on the door trying to stay still so I didn't look like I counted the hours, minutes, and seconds till I held my sweet baby in my arms again. Even though I did, a few minutes of waiting the door open and revealed a yawning Steve still in his pajamas, which meant I had woken him up, "I'm sorry , I thought you'd be awake" I didn't realize how rude that must have sounded so I added "I'm sorry, I meant-" he interrupted saying. "No it's fine, we just had a long night" , I than and to panic saying "is he okay". Steve nodded saying "yeah , fine just car crazy party that's all" I side since Steve knew the rules and "no partiesc" as one of them , since he always like to tease me about Jackson becoming a party animal and a ladies man like Steve was when I met him. "Steve" I said entering his apartment "you know I dont-" then cut me off again saying "will you relax , I'm joking we watched a movie last night , and I didn't realize how long Black Cauldron was". I sighed taking a breath as he added. "Y/n , you don't seriously think I would do that, do you" , I shook head saying "just double checking". He nodded walking into his kitchen saying "have you have breakfast yet" , I shrugged saying "I had a cup of coffee before i left and I have a granola bar in my purse for the road". He than began to shake his head saying "no , why don't I make you breakfast" before I could answer he said "I insist". I sighed saying "fine , but I'm helping" , he nodded saying "well you know where the eggs are".

My focus on cooking the scrambled eggs for breakfast, was interrupted by feeling a small for your run into my legs. I turned the stove off and place the spatula in the pan before picking up Jackson, who was rubbing to sleep out of his eyes in his dinosaur pajamas. " hi sweetie , did you have a good sleep" I asked as I began rubbing his back to lull him awake. He nodded , nustuling his head into my neck as I added. "Mommy really missed you" , he again nodded while remaining quiet , before asking "where's daddy?" I sighed saying "getting dressed". Jackson then asked "are we going home now"

Already sick of me” Steve said returning to the kitchen in his green vest he wore to work.  Before picking Jackson up and tossing him in his arms , causing Jackson to laugh and me to say. “Before careful with him Steve” he chuckled saying“he’s fine Y/n” I sighed placing some of the scrambled eggs on a plate handing it to Steve. As the three of us began digging into our breakfast , I couldn’t help but think about how long it had been since the three of us had sat down together for a meal , and how I missed it.

After breakfast I went to take everyone’s plate to wash them up , but before I could Steve already had saying. “I got it , don’t worry” I then rubbed Jackson’s head saying. “Go get dressed , so we can get going” he nodded exiting the kitchen. Before Steve could take the glass in front of me I grabbed it saying. “At least let me help” he nodded knowing he couldn’t argue with me. As Steve and I began washing dishes I spoke up saying “thanks again for taking him this weekend” he nodded saying “it’s okay , I really didn’t mind it” I nodded again saying “really Steve thank you , I didn’t think we’d be swamped at work like that” he smiled saying “Y/n you know I’d do anything for Jackson and you , I-“ he was then cut of by Jackson entering the Kitchen again saying “I’m ready Mama”. I handed Steve another plate to dry saying “okay tell daddy goodbye”. Jackson jumped into Steve’s arms giving him a hug as I added  “and say thank you for letting you stay up late”. Jackson then gasped looking at Steve saying “you told her , daddy” Steve nodded as Jackson added “I’ll miss you daddy” Steve nodded saying “I’ll miss you too bud, but I’ll see you again next weekend”.

Jackson then snuggled into Steve’s neck mumbling “I love you daddy” Steve nodded saying “I love you too , but I’ll see you on Saturday ”. Jackson continued to nuzzle into Steve’s neck before Steve said “okay , I think it’s time to go with mommy now” he nodded before handing Jackson to me . Placing a kiss on his tear stained cheek , since it was always hard for Jackson to part with Steve since the pair were so close. I began walking to the front door with Jackson and as I leaned to grab Jackson’s bag , but Steve grabbed it saying “let me help you with that”. I sighed saying “aren’t you going to be late for work”. He shook his head as we began exiting the apartment and began walking to my car. “Only for you” he said , he then quickly added “I mean for both of you”. I then noticed Steve was blushing heavily , after putting Jackson in his car seat , as Steve began to walk back to his car for work I spoke up saying. “Hey Steve” he turned around and started walking back towards me , in acknowledgement that he was listening. I then said “thanks again for watching him” before he could say anything else I grew some courage and kissed his cheek , causing him to blush like before , I then apologized saying “I’m sorry I shouldn’t have”.  He shook his head saying “no it’s okay , it’s just different”. I nodded , trying to shake away the awkwardness that just occurred between us. I then turned to walk back to my car saying “bye” he then waved , entering his car.

As I began driving away I couldn’t help but try to continue to feel so awkward , should I have kissed Steve’s cheek , was it weird , we’re maybe just better as friends.
