Chapter Seventeen : Something Wicked This Way Comes
The forest felt all encompassing, like the branches could tilt down to embrace me and I would fall lightly into their arms. The green would slowly swallow me and I would wait for time to finally call my name. Peace.
The rotting smell of Penny's body shook me back to reality. There was something playing on the back of my mind and I couldn't place it. It had been swallowing me since Rem and I pulled her body to shore. Something about this entire situation wasn't fitting. Something was tragically off.
"Five more minutes and we'll hit the bamboo grove. Right before that, on the edge of the woods," Kit spoke "That's where..."
We'll bury her.
Kit and Remington were carrying the body in between the two of them. Rem kept looking around the area for hidden cameras and Kit had a perpetual frown on his face. I hadn't looked at her face. I couldn't. Not since we pulled her up, I didn't feel like I had that right. Penny probably had a family at home, friends, perhaps a lover that didn't know her body was currently decaying. They wouldn't know that we were about to lower her into the ground.
When we reached the spot Kit wanted to bury her, we all started digging. I let the gravel sink beneath my marriage manicure. I let the dirt taint the ivory white polish on the tips of my nails and I cherished every minute of it. If my mother knew that I was digging up dirt for a dead girl, she would clutch her pearls and probably faint. So I dug harder.
After, Kit hauled her body from the ground and gently placed her in the rectangular shaped hole we had dug. He moved to scrape the dirt back into the hole before I told him to stop. I couldn't hear my own voice but I felt the vibrations travel up my throat.
Crouching down, I whispered to her "You're going to go home now, Penny."
Then, we placed the dirt on top of her body and left her to the earth. When we walked back, I found the end of a screwdriver on the forest floor, and the tugging in my mind hardened.
