Part 16: But would they write a song for you?

Start from the beginning

“Alright, I guess I see your point,” I heard Karlie shout from the kitchen. “I’d hate for you to be a home wrecker.” She erupted in laughter as I turned the faucet on.

“You are absolutely ridiculous, Karls.” I said in return. “Besides, don’t you have more management stuff to figure out today?” I stepped into the shower and felt the hot water beat against my skin.

“Nah, I figured I would let Dianna deal with it. I do pay her to do that kind of stuff.” She said.

“I guess so,” I responded. It was silent between us for a few moments, but it was comfortable.

After finally washing away any trace of last night events, I shut off the water and stepped out of the shower. Wrapping one towel around my hair and one around my body, I walked back into the kitchen. I could smell the warm scent of fresh pancakes and I heard the sizzling sound of bacon being cooked. Karlie was just taking the last pancake out of the pan when I got to the kitchen counter.

“Smells great babe,” I said as I sauntered over to her and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. “Let’s eat!”

After we finished our breakfast, we lied on her couch and tried to find something decent on TV. It was only 8:30, so the only shows that were on were different news networks. Of course, a lot of them would flash a picture or two of us kissing in front of Karlie’s apartment yesterday.

“You know, that really is a great picture,” Karlie mentioned as she played with my fingers. “I’ve got to hand it to the paps, they are pretty good photographers when they want to be!”

“Are you kidding? They always catch the WORST candid shots of me!” I laughed.

“Taylor, please tell me you’re joking. You are like the Queen of Candid’s. I have never seen one bad candid shot of you. This is actual science Tay. Even your fans have pointed it out on various occasions.” We both burst out into laughter. She had a point; I’ve seen the odd post on Twitter and Instagram, but I always figured that they were a little bit biased.

“Anyway, next topic…” Karlie said as her voice trailed off.

“Next topic…” I repeated, looking over at her.

“What are you and Mr. OneRepublic going to be working on today? Do you have any ideas yet, or are you just planning on winging it?” She asked interestedly. A small grin snuck across my face. I liked that she was interested in my music; a lot of my exes never really bothered to ask, and I was always a little hurt that they didn’t seem to care about my work; meanwhile anything they did was always the front and center of our conversations.

“Well, I had this one idea and I sent a voice memo of it to him last week, while you were in London, but he didn’t get back to me. So I’m thinking that we’re probably going to start from scratch.” I said.

“That was kind of rude of him, to not reply,” Karlie said. “What was it about? Can I hear it?” She asked excitedly.

“Well, I don’t know if you’re going to like it, and I don’t have a piano with me, so its not really going to sound as good without the background music.” I reasoned.

“Taylor, I don’t care,” Karlie said as she grabbed my hand. “I know whatever you show me right now isn’t going to be a studio version. I’m no artist but I definitely wasn’t born yesterday and I kind of get how music works!” She laughed. I sat up and turned to face her.

“Okay, I’ll show you!” I said.

Karlie looked at me intently with a big grin on her face. She looked like an over-excited child who just saw candy.

“Alright, so I sent a voice memo to Ryan like last week, in case he wrote back and said ‘I can’t stand that I want to work on something else, think of something else’. So, I just sat down at my piano and explained to him where I saw the melodies sitting in, and so hopefully he likes it and maybe we’ll record it today!” I explained.

“Anyway, this is a song called I Know Places. Um, so as I grew more nervous about us going public—I started writing it. This was last week while you were in London—and I know that we’re past that now obviously, but I really think it could make the album and—“ Karlie put her hand on my shoulder.

“Taylor, stop rambling. You don’t have to freak out. Just sing the song,” She said. “I think its incredibly sweet that you wrote something about us, so please don’t be nervous. You perform in stadiums with a hundred thousand people, Taylor. You don’t have to be nervous just because you’re around me.” She was right. I didn’t know why I was so freaked out about it, probably because even though I had written songs about people before, I never actually shared them intimately with the person it was about.

“Fine, I’ll sing now,” I said with a smile on my face.

“Go for it!” Karlie urged, she quickly clapped her hands together with enthusiasm. I sat up a little more straight, and looked down at my hands and started to sing

You stand with your hand on my waistline

It’s a scene and we’re out here in plain sight

I can hear them whisper as we pass by

It’s a bad sign

Something happens when everybody finds out

See the vultures circle in dark clouds

Love’s a fragile little flame it can burn out

….

They are the hunters we are the foxes

And we run

Baby, I know places we won’t be found

And they’ll be, chasing their tails trying to track us down

‘Cause I know places we can hide

I know places

I know places

“So basically yeah… That’s all I’ve got right now… I wanted it to be like a dark bridge or whatever and its just like; everyone’s trying to ruin a love or whatever… You know…” I mumbled. My heart started to pound a little faster when Karlie stayed silent. My hands grew sweaty and I found myself fidgeting my fingers, but I didn’t want to look up to see her reaction.

“Yeah, I know… It’s not as great as I thought; I can kind of see why Ryan didn’t message me back about it now.” I swallowed loudly and was trying to catch my breath when I felt her fingers gently touch the bottom of my chin to lift my head up. Now that I was looking at her, I could see that her gorgeous green eyes shined a little more than usual due to the water welled up inside them.

“Taylor, that’s a beautiful song. Even if it is further from the truth,” She smiled and tilted her head slightly. “You portrayed it so perfectly, and now I get why you were so afraid to come out.”

“I’m so happy that you like it Karlie,” I beamed. “I think it’s just the songwriter in me that visualized our relationship going crazy though. You know I can be a little dramatic sometimes.” We both laughed.

“Either way, that’s a good one, and if you don’t put it on the album, I’m breaking up with you.” She giggled, twirling a strand of my hair between her fingers. We gradually leaned in to each other, our lips slightly parted.

“Well now, we wouldn’t want that.” I murmured.
