The two adventurers continued through the swamp without their companion. Although they had entreated her to follow them on the rest of their journey, she had refused. Maybe it was because they had subsisted off of her knowledge of edible plants and her cooking skills for their entire trip through the desert. Maybe it was because she couldn't live with the feeling of mud seeping into her shoes. Maybe it was because the adventurers had feigned their friendship with her from the very beginning and she had found them out. Who knows? She had left before they were able to ask her any questions.
The adventurers weaved around the trees that protruded from the muddy swamp-like claws reaching for the sky. I guess they couldn't blame her leaving. The remainder of their journey would be filled with even more adversity than the first half. The reward was worth it, however. The world wouldn't look at Harper and Connor the same way again.
