The girls freaked out considering Tom is hot and every girl wants to date him. They were very supportive and bragged that yous two were together for the first few months to everybody.
The guys weren't as happy as the girls were. They knew something was up with him, but you always told them that he's good. It took some time, but they eventually warmed up to him.
