synopsis...

BALLET IS A DELICATE sport. You have to learn how to balance yourself both physically and mentally. Alíz never took the time to learn that philosophy, however, because to her father ballet was just a way to his means. A circus was looking for hires. They needed a tarot reader and a ballet dancer. Although Alíz and her mother were inexperienced, they had to learn quickly.

Alíz remembers every moment she spent in that stuffy room with those unbearable shoes and that chilling music under her father's watchful eye. Alíz wasn't allowed to mess up or slip or show any form of human emotion. She was merely a machine doing what was commanded of her.

Alíz Ivov was born into a living hell. A hell where the only thing that mattered was survival. Her father knew it, her mother knew it, and Alíz knew it. The girl was thrust into an unforgiving world of hunger, pain, and regrets. She had to learn from an early age that there is no such thing as a happy ending, only happy moments. Those moments were small and fleeting unlike the blight of life which lingered on like a parasite, draining the power of its host.

Most of her childhood consisted of her having to fight for her mother and constant criticism of her every performance. Nothing satisfied her father and, in turn, nothing satisfied Alíz. She could never truly be happy without being reminded of coming home everyday and having to worry about bills, food, running water, and her own safety.

Alíz was going through a miserable time in her life when she meets an unexpected friend. The class clown, the loudest kid in the room, the troublemaker, the attention seeker, Jerome Valeska.

The two had never been all that close even though they did live a couple of trailers down from each other. Jerome and Alíz were too consumed with their own problems to even begin to realize that they were in each other's vicinity.

Although the dark part of her life was still very much there, Jerome was her sun, shining through it all. He made her laugh, and she felt warm around him. He was the reason she was happy to live another day. He was the only one who didn't pity her. He was the only one who could understand her. He was the only person in her line of sight.

He was the only one.

But of course, good things never last for long. She remembers the sounds of the police sirens... She still remembers the cold room... She still remembers the blood-curdling laugh that rang through the speakers and gave her goosebumps. Who knew she had fallen in love with a psychopath...
