Chapter One

The Dead Arise

It was just as peaceful day as it could be in the state of Georgia. The big city of Atlanta was as chaotic as it was every day of the week. Ashley was on the balcony of her apartment, smoking a cigarette as she watches the people underneath her walkabout their lives. Ashley was waiting for her mother to arrive home, her best friend Crystal laying on her bed as she cruises through her phone, never giving up the social media life for anything. The two best friends knew each other for over ten years now. Ashely lets the grey smoke out of her mouth as she shields her eyes from the sun that's still in the sky. It was almost five in the afternoon and the sun as the heat was still prominent and making her sweat. She grabs the elastic on her wrist and ties her long brown hair. As soon as she grabs the cigarette that's still on her pinky rosy lips, she jumps in scare as gunshots are heard a couple of blocks from her shared apartment with her mother.

'' What the fuck was that? '' Her best friend yelps in scare as she looks at Ashley, waiting for an answer.

''Gunshots, stay inside '' Ashley says, trying to have a better view of what was happening. People were already screaming and the gunshots didn't stop and neither did the screams. Soon the streets of Atlanta were submerged by people running, cars hitting people that were on the street running from whatever it was they were running from. Her heart echoed through her ears as she stood on the balcony of her apartment, the only thing passing through her mind was ' where's my mother'. Panic arises on her body as she runs to her bedroom and closes the doors for the balcony with a loud thud, almost as the sound of bullets outside.

There were only a few times Crystal saw Ashley scared.

'' What's happening out there? '' She asks, getting up from her best friend's bed. Her heart beating, making her chest feel like drums.

'' We need to stay inside, the police are killing civilians, there are people running and cars running over people. It's a fucking mess outside '' Crystal never saw Ashley cry, scared yes but cry? That didnt happen often.

'' What are we going to do? '' Crystal panics.

'' Okay '' Ashley closes her eyes and breathes deeply '' We're going to grab a few bags. Put the essentials on it, food, toiletry , clothes. Everything we need imma grab the tent and the sleeping bags after. Now we need to maintain calm, oh, and see if you can find whatever the hell is happening '' Ashley says, storming off towards the hallway.

" Do you think we'll be able to get out of the city ? " Crystal asks in shock but Ashley's pale look was the only answer she got .

Running to her phone that was charging in the living room. She grabs the device and quickly looks for her mother's number. Pressing the button she waits for her mother's voice.

'' Ashley are you okay? '' Her mother asks, her voice full of panic

'' Mom where are you? I'm picking you up, the streets are not safe '' Ashley almost yells, the gunshots getting close to the street below her apartment.

''Don't, I'm safe. Stay inside the house till it's safe to leave and then come, I'm still in County at the hospital . This is crazy '' She could hear gunshots and people screaming on the other side

''Mom, what's happening there? '' She asks, the tears spilling over her eyes.

'' I need to hide, there's policeman shooting people here. Stay there, only when it's safe you leave. Darling... I love you ''

'' Mom don't say that as a goodbye please, i love you too and I'm going to get you as soon as i can ''

'' I know, stay safe, please ''

The line is cut right after, making Ashley's lungs stop function.

'' The phone's don't work, i tried to call my dad and i cant. There's no service '' Crystal comes running to the living room.

'' I know i was talking to my mom, same happened. She said the police are doing this , but i don't think it's the police. The sound of the guns they're using is not the normal Glocks, this is some serious shit Crys, we need to stay inside until the fuss stops. ''

And so, the two best friends packed everything they could in bags that could be easy to take. Lucky for them, the food Ashley's and her mother had were cans of sardines, tuna, and a lot of others. Meaning they weren't expired or go bad over the fact that Georgia was an oven. They grabbed a pan, rice, and pasta too. Food that was easy to cook on the run. Just by the looks of the city, this thing wasn't going to stop anytime soon, and when it did, the city and probably the world wasn't going to be the same. This wasn't some gang war or terrorist attack going around, these were civils getting killed, innocent people. And Ashley has seen a lot of documentaries to know that this, could probably mean the end of the world.
