I take a short breath. "I didn't fall, I let go."

"Why would you let go of a tree that tall?! You could've died!" He exclaims.

"I..That was the point," I add quickly.

summary: Evan tell Jared how he actually broke his arm.

A mix of horror, concern, and sadness flashes across his face. "Evan..."

"I'm sorry, that was so... I...I shouldn't have said tha-"

"No, Evan, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said what I did about your arm."

"It's okay."

"It's not. And hey, tell me about your feelings when you want to, ok? I can be serious."

I nod. "Thanks, Jared."

He smiles back. "No problem! That's what friends are for! Just tell me when I have to be serious."

I laugh. "Ok."

Jared pats my shoulder. "Now let's go visit your boyfriend."

"How?"

He looks at me in mock horror. "My car, of course!"

"Right, um... I just.. Sorry," I stammer.

Jared shrugs, getting in his car. "Come on!"

I hop in and he starts heading to the hospital.

¶¶time skip 20 min, idk¶¶

Jared drops me off at the hospital.

I hesitantly go in and reach the front desk.

A smiling lady greets me. "How may I help you?"

I fumble with my words. "Uh... I... Visiting Connor Murphy..."

She scrolls on her computer and immediately, her face falls. "I'm sorry, he's not accepting visitors."

"What?"

"He's in intensive care."

Those words sink my heart.

How? I thought he was doing better? What happened?

"Can I... Can I just stand by the door?" I squeak.

She tentatively agrees. "Room 70."

"Thank you," I say, already running off.

I reach Connor's room and spot Zoe.

"What are you doing here?" She seethes.

"I wanted to.. Apologize to him."

"You might never be able to," she snaps.

"How...?..What do you mean?" I ask, my heart starting to race. "Is Connor ok?"

"No, thanks to you!" Zoe spits.

"Did I....What did I do?!"

She furiously stomps over to me, thrashing a paper in my face. "This!"

I take it gently like a precious jewel and read it:

"I'm so sorry, Evan. Please come back. I can't do this. Just come back to me. I need you. Hope you're well if you ever read this. Well.. Bye, I guess."

The paper is stained with my tears. "Connor, I.." Did he?

Zoe snatches the paper back. "He's in a coma now because of you!"

"How long?" I ask.

"The day you left."

"Can I... I want to see him," I say, in between tears.

"They aren't letting-"

I push past her, opening the door and closing it while locking it.

Connor was lying on the hospital bed, sickly pale. Too many machines were attached to him.

"I'm so, so sorry," I choke. "Please wake up, I need you too."

Silence.

This all was so wrong. It can't be true.

"Hey, you're just sleeping right?"

No answer.

"Connor, wake up. Wake up, Connor!"

I stand by his bed. "I love you, so don't leave me alone! I'm back, can't you see? I'll never leave you again, I promise! Just... I can't live without you. You're the love of my life. You have to wake up and come back to me."

He doesn't even flinch.

So he's really in a coma... And he might never wake up.

I collapse onto the floor. I didn't cry because I ran out of tears.

Zoe was right. It is my fault. If I had never met Connor, he wouldn't be like this.

I just sit there, on the cold floor.

Soon, I decide it's time to leave. I go outside and into Jared's car who sends me home.

"So how's your boyfriend?" He asks.

"He's in a coma, all because of me." I say, bitterly.

Jared tries to comfort me. "He'll wake up soon."

"A lot of people who go into comas never wake up."

"Then he won't be one of those people. He will wake up, trust me."

"I hope so," I sigh, as I walk into my house.
