Delilah

After an entire year of being away from home, I without a doubt missed my family. I didn't know what to expect coming home and I tried to play different scenarios in my head as the car drove down the familiar streets of my neighborhood.

Maybe my momma bought a new couch or changed the livingroom's theme like she usually would each summer. Summer of 74 was a sunflower yellow, 75 it was bright orange, and last summer was a pretty gray.

The thought of what color it would be this summer kept me busy since Valentina went home and only Alyssa and Robert remained sleep in the back of the limo.

Last night I barely slept tending to Valentina and although this morning she seemed like her old self again- I was still worried about her no matter how much she smiled the ride back home.

We came to a stop and I felt myself smile at the sight of my apartment building.

" We're here." the driver said causing both Robert and Alyssa to wake up.

Alyssa yawned after she hugged me. " Say hi to momma and Junior for me."

" You not goin' in?"

Alyssa shook her head. " Na, I'm going home... I need to catch some Z's and plus I miss my man."

I glared between her and Robert while reaching for the door handle. " Yeah, I'm sure you do."

" Hey, I'll help you with your bags." Robert stated but I could handle them by myself - I just wanted some alone time with my family.

I hadn't heard from my mother in almost three months. The calls would go to voicemail every time I called and the last thing I remembered was that the hospital suddenly burned down... so she was moved to another hospital downtown.

I flipped my hair to the back to keep cool in the heat of the building's hallway as I stood preparing to knock on the door- until I noticed that it was slightly open.

" Ma?" I stepped through, grimacing at the mess of our living room.

There was never a time when the house would look a mess. Dishes left around, the floor needing to be swept, and the furniture dusted.
