The shower and a change of clothes had brought about a big change in Gemma's mood.

In spite of the unforgivable fact of her abduction, she couldn't help being flattered that Irvn was trying hard to please her. First, by finding new photographs from the collection she loved. Second, in his choice of wardrobe, where every item was something she might easily have chosen herself.

Now, dressed in a skinny Zsara top and J Brand jeans, she was pleased with her reflection in the mirror.

She was just about to turn her attention to choosing from three pairs of very acceptable shoes, when she heard the door to the adjoining room hiss open and Irvn appeared carrying a tray.

"Room service," he announced with a smile and stepped into the living space to set down the tray on the low table.

Already, the smell of the food had almost overpowered her.

"Entrecote steak, medium. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how you like it?"

She nodded coldly at him. "Since you seem to know so much about me, why should I be surprised you know my taste in food as well as clothes?"

Despite an overwhelming desire to fall on the food, she remained standing, staring meaningfully first at him and then at the door.

"You still prefer to eat alone?" he asked.

She nodded.

"Very well," he replied, “I will respect your wishes - for now. But we will be spending more time together before long."

“In your dreams,” she replied.

“You’re right about that,” he said - and stepped out of the room before she had a chance to ask him what he meant.

A moment later she heard the hiss of the door as it closed behind him. But just to be sure, she checked the other room to be sure he'd really gone.

Immediately, she began to regret her decision. While she had made her point - and even been a little surprised that he had respected her wishes - she quickly realised that being left alone solved nothing. A small but empty victory.

Without contact, how could she learn more about her situation? Was this really an alien spaceship? Who - and where - were the other women who had also been abducted? Where were the rest of the crew?

"Fool," she said to herself, as she sat down to eat, "this will get you precisely nowhere."

But the steak was delicious and the salad and fries that came with it were perfect, so for several minutes she was lost in the sheer pleasure of eating.

She stopped eating for a second to look at one of the new photographs he’d found for her. It showed a little girl, alone in a playground busy with children, but apparently friendless.

Clever bastard, she thought, as she returned to her food.
