Here's to the other happy ever afters
The one's we never see (there's more than one,
more than the boy and girl in love
or princes and princesses) yes, the ones
where the children don't go home.
They don't go back to the loveless home
But Gretel becomes a cook
Hansel a magician
And they are never lost again.
Where Cinderella kept her shoe
And from that one magic night
Sparked the courage to start her own life
First helping out the innkeeper, and then
Starting her own transformation business
Specialising in making poor girls
Feel like princesses.
Where one of the dwarves was medically trained
And dislodged the apple, and Snow White
Learned to love roaming the forest, and caves
And coal dust on her face, and a host of brothers
(So she was never alone again).
Yes, here's to the other happy ever afters
The ones that give me hope, I stand
In love, married to a wonderful man
But my (our) life stretches on, and happiness
Seems a snatched glimpse on a moving train
And I want more stories to read on the journey.
