Tom: Kaya mo na bang sagutin?

Sean: Ha? Ang alin?

I ask Tom as I stare at the screen of my phone.

*Alam niyo yung bad habbit ko na hindi ko talaga maalis? Is yung ilapag yung phone sa right side ko sa table while eating. Much worse, while eating in public places na really runs the risk of the phone getting stolen kung masalisihan man ako. Pero what I saw on the screen of my phone just now has me all confused.*

Tom: Yung tanong, Sean.

Sean: Anong tanong.

I'm still staring at my phone.

I know that the push notifications were short and could be fully read as one line across the screen.

I don't need to swipe for I already know.

"I wanna see you, Dude."

"Please."

"Meet me today at the National Museum of Fine Arts. I'll wait for you there."

Tom: Sean?

Sean: Sorry, what was that again, please?

Tom: Okay ka lang? Parang bigla kang namutla.

Sean: Ha? May ipu-putla pa ba 'ko?

Napatawa si Tom ng very very light with my pami-milosopo. He's giving off this really perplexed yet somewhat deeply concerned vibe just after niyang matawa with my quick quip.

*I really believe that wala na akong higher level ng putla na ma-aachieve because I'm as pale as pale can get. It's unnatural to a certain extent because I look at my Dad and he's fair but really more Southeast Asian fair. Mom takes after my abuela —The f#ck! Wait lang, why am I over-explaining here?*

Tom: Hindi nga. Nagbago kasi bigla timplada ng mukha mo ngayon lang pagka-titig mo diyan sa cellphone mo.

Sean: Ah it's nothing. I just got reminded na may due for Lit Class na paper at wala pa akong nasimulan; not even a paragraph.

*O di ba? Quick excuse.*

Tom: Sipag ah.

Sean: I've been procrastinating a lot lately nga eh. As in I never even got to work on anything for school this past Holy Week kasi nga umuwi ako sa Lola ko, di ba?

Tom: Kaya mo yan.

Sean: Alam mo ba, every time I'm like staring at the screen of the laptop pag may deadline, I go, "Paper sumapi ka sa laptop ko!"

He breaks out into almost hysterical laughter. I don't know if I was being larger than life with that pero I really did not expect it to be that funny.

Tom: Ibang klase ka rin. Buti di ka napa-pahamak sa sense of humor mo?

Sean: Hindi ko alam if it's sense of humor or too much sarcasm on my part.

Phone vibrates.

iMessage.

Joaquin:
Dude 😞😞😞

*Ignore it, Sean. You don't have the luxury of cutting class for such a request.*

Phone vibrates.

iMessage.

Joaquin:
Notice me naman.

Phone vibrates.
