"Now listen here Fin, we may not be able to protect you," Hylla, his mom, said. "Don't resist when they come to pick you up."
She softened her stone - faced expression, her dimples showing. She had glowing skin riddled with old scars which she never spoke about. Her dark hair had a few strands of white.
Finnick wasn't going to listen to another boring lecture about his safety.
"Blah blah blah......" he shouted, cupping his ears as he left her office. He quickly made his way through the identical hallways to the roof of the sky scrapper without giving it a thought.
He had gone to the roof too many times to count.
Finnick, you're life is in danger.
Finnick, let us help you.
He was tired of listening to his mom and his aunt,Reyna, tell him that his life was in danger.
He sat on the edge of the roof overlooking San Juan.
He wished he could be one of the students walking from school on the streets below.
Instead, he got to be homeschooled by his mom.
She was the C.E.O of amazon corp. and she always insisted that he stays close to her. He could almost feel the employees' children call him a mama's boy during 'bring your child to work' day.
He wanted to be free for once. He didn't have any friends except the lady at the reception who gave him peanut M&Ms occasionally.
Angry thoughts were flooding his mind when a tall guy with alot of beard sat next to him.
He wore orange overalls like all the men in the building. He had never seen him before. Finnick was angry at him for no reason. He just wanted to smack him up the head.
The man removed his sporty glasses revealing ember - red eyes surrounded with benign wrinkles.
"So Fin, your mom is looking for you," he grunted. "She is upset that you ran away.........again. She is too busy overseeing some shipment to come herself."
Finnick expected him to take him back to his mom hoping for a tip but he stared listlessly at the city's skyline. He just wanted to punch the man's face.
"My name is .....A....Arjen, yes, Arjen."
Finnick was rooted to the spot unable to find his words. He was used to being a ghost at the building. He rarely spoke to anybody let alone a man.
For some reason, Amazon had alot more women than men and only the men wore uniforms. He was not allowed to speak to them.
The first time he had come to the building, he asked the lady at the reception about it,but all he got was a sheepish smile and a packet of peanut M&Ms.
Arjen popped some red, cherry gum into his mouth.
"You always seem sad about being left out in the world. Look at teenagers like you down there having fun. You want to be normal. Not having your strict mom hovering around you everytime. I see how that can make you angry. Careful! Don't burst a vessel!" He chuckled.
"Have some gum," he held out a piece of cherry gum to Finnick.
The idea that Arjen understood him so well infuriated him.
He was angry at Arjen, angry at his mom, angry at the world and the stupid gum Arjen was offering him.
Somehow, he couldn't do anything about it. He took the gum. He had assumed it was cherry - flavoured but a strong taste of chocolate flooded his mouth with just a hint of mint.
"Remember this, you will always find the unexpected and you must be ready for it," Arjen said as he stood up. "Meet me here tomorrow. We have alot to discuss."
He walked to the stairwell and disappeared into the fifty - floor amazon corp. building.
The sky had turned crimson as the sun sunk in the horizon.
