"So he really kissed you?" asked Charlotte later that night, still in awe over what had happened. "I mean, he really kissed you!?"

"You're really still talking about this?" I said, starting to get annoyed. Charlotte, Beck and I were all laying down in the grass in my front yard looking up at the stars. We did that often, just looked at the stars and talked. One of the things that made the three of us so close was that we told each other practically everything, and this was when we had the bulk of our conversations.

"Of course I'm still talking about this! How can you not talk about it?" she insisted.

"I could sure manage not to," chimed in Beck. Of course! I hadn't even considered how awkward it must be for him to have to listen to Charlotte and I obsessing over some guy. This wasn't exactly the kind of thing you discussed with your guy friends.

"Fine," said Charlotte. "I'll shut up for Beck's sake. But we're not through with this conversation, Rose." At that she smiled and changed the subject. "So guys, I was going to wait to tell you, but I just can't hold it in any longer. I have a huge surprise!" The excitement on her face was almost overwhelming. I had to ask.

"Well what is it?"

"Yeah what is it?" chimed in Beck. She then reached into her pocket and pulled out three wallet-sized pieces of paper and held them up to the moonlight so we could read them.

"You didn't," said Beck immediately. I couldn't tell whether he was thrilled or absolutely terrified.

"Oh yes she did," I said. In Charlotte's hand were three fake ID's, each with one of our faces right in the middle of them. "Where did you get those?"

"I know a guy," she smirked, obviously proud of her accomplishment.

"We can't actually use those!" I protested. "Do you know how much trouble we could get into? "

"I'm with Rose on this one," admitted Beck. "Pretty soon we're going to have to start applying for colleges and I don't want this kind of thing on my permanent record." He then gave Charlotte a sort of warning glance. "Neither should you."

Charlotte was appalled. "It's not like we're going to get caught! That's the whole point of the fake ID. Come on, it'd be so much fun! I know this place downtown called The Metropolitan. I've heard that it's one of the coolest places in town. Everyone goes there, even Oprah."

"Really? Oprah came to our small town to visit a night club?" I said sarcastically.

"Well, probably. I mean, who wouldn't?" Charlotte retaliated.

"Us. We're not," Beck said. "Or at least I'm not." He then glanced over me as if to ask what my decision was.

"Neither am I, Charlotte," I claimed. "It's way too risky."

Charlotte looked extremely disappointed. "Well I'm not going by myself."

"Then I guess your not going," Beck and I said simultaneously.

"JINX!" Beck shouted before I could get a word in. At that we both started to laugh, forgetting that Charlotte was still lying there silently sulking.
