"Get down!" I yelled.

I got up quickly and pushed him out of his seat.

There was a loud gunshot and the noise of glass breaking.

The sounds of screams filled the air.

I lifted my head from the floor.

Only to realize it wasn't the floor.

I landed on top of Jax.

Well, this is awkward.

He groaned as he raised his head slightly.

He saw our position.

"What happened?" He asked.

"Someone just tried to kill you." I got off him.

"Was it you? You just collapsed on me." He got up from the ground

I looked over at the building.

The sniper was gone.

The glass was broken and cracked.

Employees were hidden behind the order counter.

The table we were at was broken.

Makes sense since I climbed over it.

My laptop was on my floor.

I picked it up.

The screen was shattered and there was a hole in it.

Well better my laptop than Jax.

The sound of sirens approached the café.

I dropped the laptop again.

The cops came bursting in with their guns pointing in every direction.

"What happened!?" The chief asked.

The rest of the officers went to help everyone else in the café.

"There was a sniper," I spoke.

"Why would a sniper attack a lonely coffee shop?"

"I don't know but it has something to do with him." I pointed to Jax.

The chief looked at him.

"Mr. Baden? What are you doing here?" He asked Jax.

So his last name is Baden?

"I came to get coffee then I hear the sound of a gunshot." Jax replied.

The chief turned back to me. "How did you know this? Did you set it up?"

He stepped closer to me.

I took a step back.

Jax stepped between us.

"Chief, she saved me. She pushed me out of the way."

"She could have planned this so you'd owe her a favor."

"No. She wouldn't do that." He turned to me. "Tell him your name."

"I'm Jade Holt." I said.

The chief's eyes widened then his eyes went back to normal.

"Where did you see the sniper?" He asked.

I walked over to the window and pointed to the building

"This is now a crime scene. No one is allowed to leave until they give a statement."

The chief walked over to the group of people.

"Looks like we are going to be here a while." Jax spoke.

I wasn't listening.

I was too busy glaring at the chief.

"What's wrong?" He asked.

"He stopped blaming me after he heard my name." I responded.

"Is that a bad thing?"

"Yes! He should have believed me because I saved you. Not because of my last name."

"Well, yeah that's pretty bad." He stared at the ground.

I walked over to the corner of the room and sat on the ground.

Jax came over and sat next to me.

"Why was that sniper after you?" I asked.

"What do you mean?"

"The light was on you. It did not move from your temple."

He shrugged. "I don't know. I have a lot of enemies."

"And they want to kill you?" I asked not believing him.

He nodded casually. "Yeah."

"Why?"

"Grudges, basically."

"Ok. That didn't answer anything." I mumbled.

"Honestly it's better if you don't worry too much about it."

"How do you know the chief of police?" I changed the subject.

"My dad knows him."

I nodded.

"Do you care who I am?" He asked

"What?" My eyebrows furrowed.

"I'm Jax Baden."

"I know that. What about it?"

"Do you know who my family is? Who I am?"

"The only thing I know about you is your name. Why would I know your family."

He waved me off. "Never mind."

He looked over at the table where we were sitting.

"I'll pay to replace your laptop." He said.

I looked at him like he was crazy.

"No. You already bought me coffee and a computer is way too expensive."

"It's fine."

"No. That's my final answer."

I got up from the floor and walked over to my police officer.

"Ma'am, please wait your turn."

"I really want to leave so I'm giving my statement now!" I gave a death glare.

"Ok." He looked frightened.

So who do you think the sniper was?

And why is Jax so defensive about his last name?
