“Micky, there you are,” Davy called to me. “We've been looking everywhere for you.”
“Sorry, Davy,” I said, “I've been a little distracted.”
“What's distracting you?” he asked, sitting down beside me.
“Sam,” I said simply.
“What about her?”
“I think I have to break up with her,” I said.
“What made you think that?”
“Have you read through our new song?” I asked.
“Not yet,” he admitted. I handed over my copy to him. “I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone,” he read. “Oh, I see, Micky.”
“Yeah. I've got to go talk to her,” I said.
“Good luck!” he called to me as I got up to find Sam.
“There you are, Micky,” Sam said, “People are looking for you.” She looked back towards the studio.
“Nevermind that. They can wait. We need to talk,” I told her.
“Oh, okay,” she said, following me to a place a little quieter.
“This isn't working,” I said.
“You're breaking up with me?” she questioned, trying to piece everything together. She frowned, “Why?”
“I feel that I'm being tricked and walked all over by you.” I walked away, leaving her staring after me.
“We're rehearsing the new song now,” our manager said.
“Okay,” I shrugged and got in my place. Today was not very lucky for me, not at all. I hoped things wouldn't get worse.
“I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
You're trying to make your mark in society,
You're using all the tricks that you used on me,
You're reading all them high-fashion magazines,
The clothes you're wearing, girl, they're causing public scenes.
I said, I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone (No!)
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
SOLO
When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes,
But now you're walking 'round like you're front page news,
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose,
But you won't find my name in your book of 'Who's Who.'
I said, I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone (No, girl, not me!)
I-I-I-I-I'm not your steppin' stone
I'm not your steppin' stone
SOLO
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
No, girl, I'm not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone
Not your steppin' stone.”
I looked over at a few of the extras for the show who were watching us. I saw a girl named Acacia. She smiled at me and that's when I knew that my luck was changing, for the better, of course.
