Devin's P.O.V

*Flashback*

Humming, I stepped into the small creek we lived next to. The water lapped hungrily at my ankles, washing away the dirt from a day of walking barefoot. Mom frowned at this, but I guess she understood why I hated shoes. Horse shifters are horses by nature, so it's like putting Storm in flip-flops. Funny as that is to imagine, it's not confortable.

"Hey there Delilah,

What's it like in New York City,

I'm a thousand miles away, but girl,

Tonight you look so pretty,

Yes you do...."

Suddenly, a mess of fur jumped out from behind a brush on the other side of the creek. Falling over in surprise, I crashed into the sharp rocks behind me.

"Ouch!” the single word spilling out before I could stop it.

Standing there in front of me was a grey wolf, it's nose flaring to catch my scent. This was the first time I'd seen one out here.  Standing roughly about four foot tall, the beast was an imposing figure. Black fur covered its back legs and one front paw, before turning into light grey around its face.

Trying the crawl backwards away from it, I was stopped as the animal gave a low growl. Pair of soft brown eyes met mine, as we waited for each other to make a move. It was almost as if a tether was forming between us, preventing us from looking look away.

"Devin! Time for dinner!" A soft voice yelled from the house. Mom.

As I looked away for a moment, it jumped on me. Landing on my chest, the wolf sat there looking down at me with an almost playful expression.

"Get off, fur ball!" I grumbled, clearly not amused. No matter how much I tried to push it off, the beast wouldn't budge. Wagging its tail, it growled lightly at my feeble attempts.

Inside my head, I could feel Storm enjoying the show.

A little help would be nice, I grumbled at her.

Seems like you just made a friend, she mused.

Yes, well help me get him off, I replied.

Him? Strom asked.

Attitude speaks volumes, I retorted.

Fine, little one. Have it your way.

Reluctantly, Storm let me barrow enough strength to get him off. Free of the wolf, I stood up and grimaced at my wet cloths. Mom was going to lay into me big time for this.

Looking over at the wolf, I frowned, "This is all your fault, you know." pointing at my wet shirt. He just jumped out of the water and shook himself, not even looking apologetic.

Apologetic? He's an animal for crying out loud, I snorted in my head.

"Devin! Where are you?”, Yelled my father.

"Coming, be there in a minute." I shouted. Looking back, the wolf was gone.

In his place was only a path of muddy paw prints.
