I thought I was on top of the world, the absolute luckiest person in the world. I mean, I managed to find an apartment within my first few days of searching, I went SIX WHOLE MONTHS without any sign of a person moving in, which also meant I could leave without tension to get food.

Of course, this all will come crashing down in due time, ending my luck streak. I got ready to go out and get food one day, when right before leaving, a stampede of footsteps quite literally shook me up. I was in the kitchen, and with this being a vacant apartment, was only able to hide behind the faucet.

"How does this place look to you then?" a voice asked.

"I see lots of potential in it. Rent's for how long?" another voice asked in return.

"Four years. You can decorate with whatever furnature and posters, just no painting the walls or removing what's here currently. We have all of our facilities up to date as of last year when the previous owner's rent expired." This conversation between the disembodied voices continued for a decent 15 minutes, as I stood completely still behind the faucet of the sink

"I'll take it then." What?

"Wonderful, pleasure doing business with you."  As soon as I heard the door slam, ending all noise, I came out from hiding. Does this mean I can't live alone anymore? There's no entrance to the inside of the walls, and I have no where to go otherwise.

The day of the move-in was absolute hell. Some of the main furniture came in, at first with two people carrying unimaginably large objects, then reducing to one of the two people, setting in small objects. The last to come was a cast iron plant. The leaves hung low and spanned wide, which is a convenient cover. They're also mostly waterproof and potentially edible, which is also really convenient. You can probably figure out what I did.

The new objects around the apartment gave me more things to hide behind. As the giant walked in, I'd go behind the nearest thing, trying to get closer to my destination whenever she left.

I settled in eventually, making a waterproof setup and all that. This would all be okay, until one day, not even a week late, when the inhabitor of what was once my apartment decided to move my plant from the living room to his bedroom. I was sleeping at the time, so I let out a natural squeak. I felt the plant touch the ground right away, and thought that meant we'd reached our destination. How wrong I was.

A hand shot in and wrapped around me, hoisting me to her face. She was actually really pretty? "Oh my fuck," she whispered, immediately loosening her grip and holding me in cupped hands. "I'm so sorry, let me set you down."

"You're okay," I replied, trying and failing to cover my fear.

"How long have you been here?"

"About 6 months," I said, settling in slightly.

"Did I take this from you?" she asked, eyes wide with a worried tone.

"No!" I immediately lied. "I had more than enough space, you're totally fine!"

"Okay..." she responded, eyeing the plant in confusion. "I'm Marie."

"Cory," I said back. "I can go, if you want me to-"

"You're fine," Marie interjected. "I can get you food and shelter and all that. I won't make you leave your own home."

"That'd be cool," I said, continuing the clearly dry conversation.

"Can I pick you up then?"

"... sure." I gave in.

"Great," she sat her hand down so I could get on myself. My trust began to increase, as it would onward.
