The one with the date

Start from the beginning

"Good luck," Taylor said as I went to let my date up.

"Come on up," I said, pressing the button to transfer my voice to the buzzer downstairs.

There was a knock on our door a few minutes later and I opened the door.

"Hey Arthur," I smiled.

"Wow, you have a lot of security guards," the nerdy guy said.

"Yeah, well, we don't want anyone to kill us so," I joked.

Arthur looked at me with a scared expression, making me laugh.

"I was kidding," I clarified.

"Oh," Arthur said, adjusting his glasses. "Uh, y-you look really pretty."

"Thanks," I said. "Shall we go?"

"Uh, yeah," Arthur nodded.

"Okay, bye Taylor!" I yelled into the apartment.

"Have fun, Kait!" Taylor yelled, the subtle sarcasm evident in her voice.

I shut the door behind me as I followed Arthur to his car that was waiting outside. He opened my door for me and I muttered a quick 'thanks' before he quickly got into the driver's side.

"So, where are we going?" I asked as he pulled into the street.

"Um, a French restaurant on Prince Street if that's okay? Do you like French food? If you don't we can go somewhere else, I mean, I just figured some people like French, but it's fine if you don't; like I said, we can go somewhere else-"

"Arthur," I said, stopping his rambling. "French is fine. What's the place called?"

"Little Prince," Arthur replied.

"Oh, my best friend works there," I laughed.

"Oh, cool," Arthur laughed awkwardly.

We pulled up to the restaurant and Arthur parked on the street. We walked inside and were led to a table in the corner. The hostess handed us our menus and I took mine and looked through it.

"This place is kind of expensive," I said.

"Oh, don't worry, I'm paying," Arthur said. "I just got my first paycheck at my new job."

"Where do you work?" I asked.

"Um, I work at the aquarium," he said. "I take care of the seahorses."

"Seahorses? Cool," I said.

"Yeah, they're super cool," he said. "They actually don't have teeth or stomachs, and food passes through their digestive systems so quickly, they have to be eating like all the time in order to stay alive."

"Wow," I said. This guy is even weirder than I thought.

"Yeah and they're one of the few species in the world that have the males give birth," he said.

"Ew," I said quietly, looking down at my menu.

"Hi, I'm Toby and I'll be your waiter for this evening," I heard someone say. I look up to see my best friend staring down at me with a smirk playing on his face.

"Hey, Toby," I said, smiling up at him.

"Hey, Kaitlyn, what are you doing here?" He asked, playing dumb. I had told him about this date last week and he knows how weird Arthur is since Toby has a class with him.

"This is Arthur, my date," I said with a fake smile.

"Hey, Arthur, I'm Toby, Kaitlyn's best friend," Toby smiled at the smaller, nerdy boy who was sitting in front of me.

"H-Hi," Arthur stuttered, obviously intimidated by Toby, who has the physique of a football player.

"So, anything to drink?" Toby asked Arthur.

"Um, y-yeah, I'll take a coke," Arthur stammered.

"Okay, and Kait? Shirley Temple?" Toby asked knowingly.

"You know me too well, Tobes," I laughed.

"True," Toby laughed. "Alright, well, I'll get those drinks out as soon as possible."

"Thanks, Toby," I said as he walked away.

"Wow, how do you know him?" Arthur asked.

"We actually went to school together in Nashville," I said. "We've been friends since 5th grade."

"I didn't know you were from Nashville," Arthur said.

"Yeah, well I was born in Pennsylvania, but we moved to Nashville when I was ten," I explained.

"That's cool, I went to Pennsylvania once to go to Lake Erie and study the seahorses there," Arthur said.

Again with the seahorses?

"Oh, well I lived on the other side of Pennsylvania from the lake but that's cool," I said.

"The seahorses there were so awesome," Arthur said as I internally groaned. "There were huge populations of them and we actually got to watch one give birth."

This is going to be a long night.

"This was fun, maybe we can do it again next week," Arthur said as we walked to my apartment.

"Yeah, we'll see," I told him.

"Great, well I'll see you later Kaitlyn," he said, leaning towards me.

"Yeah, bye, Arthur," I said, slipping into the apartment before he tried to kiss me.

Once I closed the door, I shuddered from disgust. I walked into the living room where, as promised, Taylor was watching Law and Order SVU with the cats.

"Hey," I said, taking my shoes off and laying down on the couch next to her.

"How was it?" Taylor asked, pausing the show.

"Awful," I said, stroking Meredith's fur as she came over and sat on my stomach.

"What happened?" Taylor asked, propping her elbow on the couch to sit up and face me.

"Well, for starters, he took me to the restaurant that Toby works at and Toby was our waiter. Plus, he was super intimidated by Toby which made him even more awkward than he already was," I explained.

"Well that's not that bad," Taylor said.

"You haven't heard the worst part," I said. "He talked about seahorses the entire time."

"Seahorses?" Taylor asked.

"Yes, seahorses, and he explained to me how they give birth," I said, disgusted at the memory.

"Ew," Taylor said, crinkling her nose.

"I know right," I said.

"Okay, enough about your trashy date," Taylor said. "Go change so we can watch Netflix."

"Alright," I said.
