"I was able to devise a plan to escape after a few years but the reason why I didn't go through with it at first was because of (Y/N). Ava would send me pictures of her growing up into this beautiful young lady. At least knowing something about her was good enough. Ava would also tell me of what's going on in her life, she'd leave out the part where she made our daughter an Elite Candidate. When I found out, that's when I left. I wished that I was able to save (Y/N) and take her with me, but I couldn't."
"Hans, don't beat yourself up for this," Mary told her husband. "As you said, this boy and her friends are taking good care of her."
"What I just wish is that I was also there for her. That she would know that she had a father who loves her and would never willingly leave her."
Mary knew that she couldn't do anything and it killed her. The only thing that she could do was to hold her husband in comfort. They could've stayed like that for a long time and neither would want to let go. But the both of them heard someone knocking on their door and they had to let go.
"Who is it?" Hans asked.
"It's Brenda," a female voice said on the other side. "The boys are already awake. They're just renewing their strength before we leave. We're asking if you'd like to come with us, perhaps see (Y/N) once more."
Hans didn't keep the secret of his past from his new visitors. Especially when they're close to his daughter.
"You can go and see her Hans," Mary said to him softly. "You can go see your daughter."
The offer was tempting for Hans. To see his daughter in the flesh after so many years. To be able to hug her and kiss her as he wanted to for so long. But his fear of (Y/N)'s reaction flooded his mind. He still left her and there's nothing more that can't be forgiven than being abandoned when there was another way.
"No," he shook his head and spoke out loud for Brenda to hear. "I won't leave. My priority is with my wife."
"Alright," Brenda said. "I'll tell them your decision."
"Hans what are you saying?" Mary hissed at her husband. "Your priority might be with me but you also have a priority with your daughter!"
"As her father?" Hans asked. "There are a lot of things that (Y/N) needs now but it isn't a father. Her friends give and fill her with a lot of love that I wish I had."
"You still could," she pressed. "Are you that afraid of your past to see the future? You can start by being her friend first, then later on her father."
As hard as Mary wanted Hans to go and meet his daughter, she couldn't bring him to do so. But the only thing that he could do that was close to it was to write her a note. A note about who he is in her life and what he wished that he was. A note that contains his deepest apologies for not being the father that he should be and for being too much of a coward to meet her. A note saying how much he loves her and how he wished he could do more.

Hours after Thomas, Newt, Minho, Jorge, and Brenda left, both Hans and Mary were silently eating their dinner until someone was knocking on their door. Both Hans and Mary shared a confused look. They had no idea who it was or who it could be. Hans stood up from his seat and opened the front door only to be shocked at who was on the other side.
Ava Paige.
"I don't have much time," Ava rushed inside before Hans could say a word. "I'm here Hans, not because of you and not because of your wife. I've known of your whereabouts for years Hans. I'm only here to tell you that you should've gone with the others and left to see (Y/N)."
"How did you-"
"Of course with their kind hearts, they should've offered you to be able to see (Y/N) again," she cut him off. "I should've told you this that it should've been an offer you accepted!" She rose her voice at him. She was no longer that different heartless person that he's seen when (Y/N) turned three. She was back to the person that he fell in love with.
"Hans who was at the-" Mary stopped short when she saw who was at the door.
"Calm down. I'm not here for either one of you, I'm here because of (Y/N)."
"What's so important Ava?" Hans found his voice and talked with his former flame with a tone of hostility that shocked both Ava and Mary. "What's wrong with (Y/N)?"
"She's dying and no amount of Crank's blood can save her. Not this time."
Hans was taken aback with the news. "Are you here to recruit me? To save her?"
Ava didn't say anything and tears were forming in her eyes and Hans understood.
"You need him to say goodbye," Mary finally said what the three of them are thinking.
"(Y/N) has always loved reading," Ava began to say. "There was this one thing that she noticed and told me one day. I didn't give it much thought until now."
"What did she say?" Hans asked.
"She said, 'The heroes or saviors in books do everything to save other people but it's always at the price of their own life. Villains don't get happy endings but neither do the heroes.' She's always wanted to be a hero and is one now."
"How will he be able to get inside WICKED? Since he escaped, he'll be wanted there," Mary asked.
"I can only get him to see her for a short while. There are perks at being the Chancellor, darling."
