Its not what I expected. But what did I expect? A school full of rowdy teens running through the hallway while I walk to class alone and a hopeful song plays quietly in the background? It's my first day of high school, and I already hate it. The hallways smell like mold, the bathrooms are disgusting, and not a single one of my teachers are nice. Although, to be honest I was quite relieved to find that my peers were not as cliche as in the movies.

I had been late to every single one of my classes earlier that morning. I struggled to find my class list which is crumpled deep down in the depths of my backpack. I quickly pull out my phone to check how much time I have left to get to my next class. Great a whole 2 minutes. I quickly pull a couple binders from my locker and shove them into my backpack, crumpling the class list even more than before.

When I walk into the classroom, i'm relieved to see it's filled with mostly freshman. I recognize a few faces from grade school, then finally Kenna's. Kenna has been my best friend since preschool. We grew up together, more like practically lived together. I used to spend every waking moment at her house- still do. Her face lights up in a huge grin as she sees me in the doorway and motions me to sit next to her.

I make my way into the empty seat just to her left. I open my mouth to tell her all about my stressful morning just when a tall skinny woman with brunette hair speaks over the hysteria of the freshman.

"Good morning class!" the woman introduces herself as Ms. Henry and writes her name on the white board in black ink. She looks no older than 27. Her light brown hair curls just above her shoulders and her glasses fit a little too large around her head. She is wearing a tight pencil skirt and a questionably revealing blouse. A couple of the freshman boys snicker as she bends over, a little too far, to reach for something in her bag. Ugh, boys.

Ms. Henry takes almost 20 minutes to explain the planned circular for her History class this upcoming year. Most of the students are attentive the first 10 minutes but start to drain her voice out more and more as the class drags on. After a half hour, the majority of the students are fully invested in side conversations rather than what parts of World War II we were going to cover. Feeling safe, I turn to Kenna.

"You won't believe the shit day I've had," I start to tell her, although she cuts me off. She's good at that - cutting me off. But I don't mind, i've gotten pretty used to it.

"I saw the hottest guy today! I saw him walking through the halls and heard a couple girls mumble about how he's a junior!" she told me, waving her hands around like it was the breaking news of the hour.

"A junior? Don't you think that's a bit old. even for you?" I tease. She has always been into older guys. Not that I haven't either, because I have, but not as much as Kenna.

"What? That's like two years! Kevin was two years older than you when you dated him!" she points out. Kevin was my ex-boyfriend. He dumped me over the summer before he moved to California. Something about how we needed a bit more space. As if a couple hundred miles wern't enough.

"Okay, I see your point. But lets try to at least get settled into high school before you start running off with some super hot jun-" I'm cut off by the soft yet stern voice of Ms. Henry.

"Miss Fallon, would you like to share with everyone?" She says in her most trying teacher voice. I know she's just trying to make an impression on us the first day so she doesn't seem like a pushover. I look around to notice the rest of my class had gone silent and I had been the only one talking. When did that happen?
