(January 1940)

I opened my eyes, slowly. I didn't really want to open my eyes but I had to. I tried to make out features and I started getting a headache. I groaned and held someone move.

"Rise and shine, Tiny," Butch said as someone helped me sit up. I was put up against something and I didn't really want to talk.

"I need you to talk to us, Tiny," Booya said and I groaned.

"What happened?" I asked.

"You got shot and removed the bullet. We stitched you up and everything. Let's get you some ice," Butch said.

"You know I don't want to leave," Alaric said as I touched his arms as he stood in his uniform. I watched as he looked around our apartment.

"My father requested that you have a guys day with his friends," I said. He sighed.

"I have friends," he huffed and I giggled.

"I know... we can say that I don't feel well," I said.

"The call is being made now," he said and I kissed his cheek.

(November 1941)

I walked next to Alaric as we walked to my family's apartment. I was slightly nervous but Alaric looked just as good in his civilian clothes. I thought that he wasn't allowed to wear civilian clothes but there he was in something Heiko or Wolf would wear.

"I didn't thank you for last night," I said as we walked. He looked over and shrugged.

"There is no reason for thanks. It's my job to protect Germany," he said. I blushed a little.

"I am not Germany," I commented. He looked forward and smiled a little.

"You are the only reason I fight for Germany," he said and my heart stopped. He just suggested that he wouldn't fight for Germany if I was there.

"You know about your sister and what she does, don't you?" I asked as we turned down an alley.

"I am assuming that you know as well," he stated as he stopped. I nodded.

"I got her involved and I am sorry about that," I said, looking down.

"I'm glad you did. I don't have to worry about her anymore. She will be protected by you and America," he said as he grabbed my hand and I gripped his hand back.

"I won't let her get hurt, Alaric. I owe you too much," I said. He cupped my face and stepped closer to me.

"I love you. You don't owe me anything," he said and I was taken aback. Love?

"I still owe you. Wolf could have killed me last night," I said. He sighed.

"What is Wolf's last name? I saw a military uniform and I'm certain his commanding officer won't like that he was beating a lady," he said and I sighed.

"Engel," I told him. He got a surprised.

"Does he have a brother named Thomas in the army?" I looked at him and nodded.

"Yes," I whispered. He groaned.

"Then Engel can deal with Wolf so you and I can just enjoy our time together and I don't want to go kill him," he said. I smiled realising that he was trying to be civil.

For me.

I coughed up blood and the soldier laughed as I did. I wiped my mouth and the soldier kicked me over so I was laying on my side. I groaned as the soldier pulled Jack up. Jack looked so weak and I have no idea how we survived so long with how they were treating us.

"Don't you see what you two do to each other? Just accept God and not be together and you will stop getting punished," the soldier said as I curled up into a ball.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, "This is all my fault." Jack shook my head and I thought about the conversation we had the night before.

"You are twenty one, Adal. Stop blaming yourself for everything," Jack said, hoarsely. I looked at the floor that was between us.

"You wouldn't be in this mess if I didn't let you kiss me," I said, "If I was smart and didn't let emotions catch us in this darkness."

"You are smart and if we didn't have each other here, I think we would be dead by now," he said and I shivered from being cold. That's the weird thing about being fifty to sixty pounds underweight, you get cold so easily and nothing really make you warm. Jack still attempted to make me warmer by wrapping his arms around my body.

"We shouldn't be in this mess to begin with. I went to church every Sunday and my family and I prayed," I sniffled and he tried to wipe my eyes but I looked away.

"You have to understand that there is nothing wrong with being like us. We work and live and laugh just like everyone else," he said, "and no one can force us to change because we are perfect just like everyone else." I looked at him and he kissed my temple as I closed my eyes.

"I don't want you to get in more trouble," I said and he nodded.

"And I don't want to watch you die," he said. I looked at him.

"How many people do you think died so far?" I asked as Zach walked towards us.

"At least 10,000," Jack said as Zach sat with us.

"I would go higher and say like 20,000," Zach said. I nodded.

"Maybe once we get out of here, we can find out how many people died," I said and Jack smiled as Zach shook his head.

"The one thing that never changes," Jack told Zach. I raised my eyebrow.

"What?" I asked.

"Regardless of what is happening, your hope doesn't waver even if we are dying," Zach said and I bit my lip.

"Well, I think my brother has a plan," I said. We were all silent.

It wouldn't be until 1947 that I learned that the number of deaths were in the millions. We underestimated.
