(Nemesis here writing from the fire zone! I might be headed to Southern California soon, but for now I'm stuck with the McAllister boys and my weird fanfictions... wish me luck! Also side note, you can skip this chapter if you feel like it, only MTG nerds will really understand me.)
"Shut up! Shut up shut up shut up! You can't block my desolation twin! I just got it out!"
"I can. I have a counter and you don't have four extra mana to spare. Suck on that loser."
"I hate you."
"You too Nems." A frustrated yell slipped between clenched teeth, and Fire couldn't help but laugh. Classic Carter. She picked up the tray of snacks she had been preparing and slipped into the living room to find Nemesis, Carter, and Kat kneeling around the coffee table, decks of cards and carefully placed spreads outlining their playing areas. Nemesis' elbows spread wide and her head in her hands as Carter laughed manically.
"What're you playing? And what the hell is a desolation twin?" Another angry groan came from Nemesis as she shook.
"Only the best card in an Eldrazi deck!!"
"What's an Eldrazi?"
"Eldrazi are an ancient race native to the Blind Eternities that have neither physical form nor color alignment. Their nature is ceaseless hunger, so they travel between planes devouring the mana and life energy until the plane's destruction."
"...What?"
"Its a species in Magic the Gathering."
"And Magic the Gathering is...?" Nemesis groaned and flopped her forehead on the battlefield.
"Carter take over." Carter cleared his throat and looked up at Fire, saying in his best documentary voice,
"Magic the Gathering is a card game where you battle the other players. Each player starts the game with twenty life and the object of the game is to be the last one standing. Each player plays creatures, instants, sorcery to kill the other player. Each spell costs mana to cast. Creatures can sometimes have special abilities; Haste, Deathtouch, Trample, Lifelink, First strike, excetera."
"So... its like Pokémon?" Carter inhaled sharply and shook his head,
"It is not Pokémon. Not even close. First off, Magic has far more intricate game mechanics and each different color of mana has a completely different playing style, Pokémon is pretty much the same stuff but different colors, but Magic..." He chuckled, "Secondly, Magic has extremely complicated lore. Eldrazi, Allies, Planeswalkers, Sphinxes. Each one has different relationships to one another and some deck styles can be used in specific game types to-"
"Okay I get it... not Pokémon. What are the different colors of mana?" Fire interrupted. Kat answered before Carter could continue,
"Black, red, blue, green, white. Each mana type has a different playing style. Red is damage, blue is control, green is growth, white is defense, and black is power. I'm playing a red/black vampire deck, Carter is playing a blue/white deck, Nemesis is playing blue/black/red Eldrazi."
"With allies." Nemesis added
"Oooooo-kay." Fire said, and Nemesis groand
"Do you wanna just play?"
"Sure!" Nemesis fished around in her bag and pulled out a deck bound with a blue and a black rubber band. A collective intake of breath came from Carter and Kat.
