(This title is a pun... Water, catastrophe... Aqua-strophe? It's good hush now. Fire is a Goddess I swear her puns are great.)
Its been a long couple of days.
They had just come back from a couple of days in dimension X-042, and it was good to be back at the barracks. No fire spurts, no blasting hot air. No squelchers...
But Kat decided that they should go to the beach. It wasn't too far from the barracks, and it was a gorgeously hot day outside.
And it wasn't that Nemesis didn't want to go to the beach per say... but she just. Didn't, want to go to the beach. Okay so maybe that was exactly it, and she wasn't going to be peer pressured into it.
"Guys..." she whined, "Why do we have to go to the beach?" She stopped in her tracks. "Its stupid, its hot, its windy and its probably going to be crowded," This last comment was directed at Shat who seemed slightly nervous by the prospect.
"Oh shut up Nemesis, the stretch of beach here is never crowded, its just hot enough for the ocean to feel lovely, and I'm sure theres a seagull or a small child for you to torment there" Carter said, nonplussed. "Now hurry up, you're holding back the group."
She huffed and marched on after him. The purple polyester of her rash guard sticking to her. Her board shorts too large and chaffed as she walked. But there was no way in hell she was wearing a bikini so...
She was lagging behind. She sped up, flip flops slapping on the packed earth of the path, sunglass falling down her nose. All topped of with a large black sunhat. She wasn't even sure why she came in the first place. She guesses it was that or staying home in the barracks alone with the moths. And those gave her the creeps so no way she was doing that alone.
The path wound it way uphill and to the top of a bluff covered in long dried out grasses and scrub. It tapered out into a plateau with several smaller paths leading to the sand below. Then beyond that a beige expanse of coarse sand dotted with rocks and seagulls, and past that...
She shivered despite the warmth of the heat clinging to her like a wet blanket.
"See Nemesis," Carter spoke matter of factly, "There are all these lovely seagulls just ready to be tormented right here." He then turned to Fire, "And she said she'd hate the beach..."
Fire giggled, "Neme," she shouted over the wind, "We're all gonna get in the water, come on."
"I really don't think I wan-"
"Come on Nemesis" said Kat dragging at my hand "It'll be better when you get in the water,"
"Sh-sh-she'll come if she wa-ants to." stuttered Shat putting a hand on Kat's shoulder.
"But even Maddy came, and she never does anythi-"
"Hey!"
"Sorry Maddy," said Kat, "But who else is gonna drown Carter when he makes a horrible pun?" Now it was Carter's turn to be upset,
"Hey! My puns are al-waves fabulous." he said crossing his arms and looking proud. Fire snorted.
"Ugh."groaned Kat, "See what I mean! We need help with this."
"Yeah, maybe later guys."
"Come on Nemesi-"
"I said, maybe later okay? Now go have fun or whatever." Shat dragged Kat away and Maddy soon followed. Carter gave her one last raised brow and a smirk before jumping down the path. Only Fire stayed up with her. She said,
