okay, UVB - 76 (identification name) is a station more commonly known as "the Buzzer" since it mainly broadcasts a buzzing sound. this buzzing sound is interrupted every few years by a Russian voice that recites various different names and numbers.

the Buzzer goes back all the way to 1982 and it can still be heard today. for a long time, the station just aired the continuous buzzing sound, until one day it stopped and a Russian voice read out:

"Ya UVB 76, Ya UVB 76. 180 08 BROMAL. 74 27 99 14. Boris, Roman, Olga, Mikhail, Anna, Larisa. 7 4 2 7 9 9 1 4."

weird, right ?

from then on the signals only became more frequent, increasing the listeners tuning in.

now, at first it was believed the buzzing signals were just a prerecorded message and no one was actually manning the thing. that's until some listeners starting noticing little background noises like muffled conversations. the listeners concluded the buzz was manually produced, and not a recording.

this peaked in 2010, with odd occurrences happening monthly. this excited enthusiasts all over since in the beginning there was only the constant buzz.

over the later months, the Buzzer just stopped transmitting. there were fears that the UVB 76 was part of Russia's Dead Hand system — "designed to deploy nuclear weapons in an automated retaliative strike even if those in command were wiped out" — but UVB 76 started transmitting again.

in case y'all want more on the Dead Hand System:

the interruptions were still odd — like one day in September 2010, the buzzing was interrupted by an instrumental part of Swan Lake

in October 2010, followers of the signal noticed a morse code with the location of the transmission changing. UVB 76 was believed to be in a small Russian Village called Povarovo, but UVB 76 was no longer there. in fact, it no longer existed.

then, a male voice broke the buzzing with another message:

"Mikhail, Dimitri, Zhenya, Boris. MDZhB."

the new location of the station was harder to triangulate, but the previous location was known. so in 2011, urban explorers went to the abandoned base at Povarovo.

it was described as a "basic Russian military bunker"

here's a statement of one of the explorers on how he described the bunker.

most things they found were useless, until they stumbled upon a journal log of the transmissions of UVB 76

most things they found were useless, until they stumbled upon a journal log of the transmissions of UVB 76. this gave evidence UVB 76 was in fact based in Povarovo for sure.

when the explorers entered the base, they'd found a dog guarding the entrance, and in one of the log entries it said

"18:30 guard dog has put on place on post 173."

that entry was from 2005.

the explorers went in 2011.

that meant someone was still coming by the base to feed the dog and maybe watch out for the bunker.

now, no one has been able to crack the codes the Buzzer is transmitting, but one of the recent ones is definitely associated with the military

one of the theories is that the Buzzer is part of Russia's Dead Hand nuclear failsafe system. it's says the Buzzer is like a deadman switch — if it ever stops buzzing, it'd activate an automatic nuclear retaliation from Russia's nuclear missile silos.

idk man but i hope that ain't true.

but if it is do not worry bc UVB 76 is still buzzing happily up until recently.
