Y/N looked off her balcony, examining the beauty of the falling snowflakes against the background of a starry sky. Each snowflake shimmered vibrantly, no two alike, but yet all came together to form the dusty white puffs that spread themselves upon the stone statues. This moment was quiet and at the same agonizingly lonely. She was alone in her thinking, alone in her breaths, alone in her world, just as always.

Everyday she stood here, in this very spot. Here she would watch the few people walk in and out of the castle, mainly those who were set to be executed or brought in front of her mother, the Queen. It was a sad spot here, lonely even. It was her only outlet to the outside world, she wasn't allowed to leave the castle otherwise. Y/N wasn't even allowed in the castle gardens despite being only a few feet away. Here she dwelled in the tower of the silver palace, sheltered from the outside world.

A cloud of purple smoke behind Y/N brought her to her senses. "Mother!" She turned around and there, Queen Regina, was dressed in one of many extravagant outfits."

"Good Evening Y/N." Regina grinned. "Did you finish your studies?"

"I did mother." Y/N looked up into the sky wistfully. "The snow, do you see how it falls upon the ground? How does each one have an identity to call their own while being within clusters of millions?"

"It's a little magic of its own, Y/N." Regina walked over and smoothed the small snowflakes out of Y/N's hair. "Just like you are a little magic of mine."

"Mother," Y/N paused, still looking out off the balcony. "You know that I'm sixteen now and that...well that I'd like to see the world."

"The world?" Regina shook her head. "Don't you know how dangerous it is? The villains, the cheats, the thieves!"

"I know," Y/N paused. "But I just need to see what's over those walls." She raised her arms to the sky and closed her eyes. "I've always dreamed of flying up and over them into the city."

"Y/N," Regina led her inside by the hand. "Forget those dreams. You have all that you need and you are safe here."

"But-"

"Forget those disillusions. They will never happen."

Y/N hung her head low. "Yes mother."

"Good." Regina then disappeared in a cloud of purple smoke, leaving Y/N alone once again.

"Forget my dream?" Y/N laughed. "I don't think so." Y/N ran out to the edge of the balcony and looked over to the wall. "One day I will fly over that wall." She took a deep breath and exhaled, leaving a fog in the cold air. "One day."

That night Y/N stirred in her sleep, dreams of adventure running throughout her mind. Little did she know that before she went to sleep, she had forgotten to lock the balcony door.

Y/N was woken with the sound of footsteps crossing the room. Thinking that it was her mother, she called out to it. "Mother, is that you?" No answer. This time she didn't hear the stir of footsteps. It was as if the sound hadn't existed at all. With an exhausted yawn, Y/N fell back asleep only to be woken again with the feeling of someone sitting at the end of her bed.

"Mother, what's going on?" Y/N slowly opened her eyes only to find a boy with piercing green eyes and sandy brown hair instead of her mother. Y/N gasped and gathered up her blankets, hugging them in shock. "Who are you?" She asked nervously.
