Chapter 60

"Standing out here is not going to change the outcome."

I stared into the room at Creed in the bed surrounded by his family and doctors. "I know."

"They are waiting for you."

I sighed, steeling my nerves against every possible outcome. "I know."

"Take as long as you need." Silas patted my shoulder as he walk by  and enter the room.

I can do this. Creed will wake up, he is too annoying to leave me alone.  Are you listening to me Creed?

Nothing, I heard nothing through our mindlink. Our mate bond felt weak and I was scared to go into that room. I was scared that everything I had dreamed about was about to shatter into little pieces. I really might be destined to be alone.

Blowing out a frustrated sigh, I pulled the door open. I was greeted by silence. I notice the automatic retreat from one of the doctors near the monitors.

"Eva, here have a seat." James move to the side revealing a chair that was positioned at the head of the bed. I squeezed through the bodies of a nurse and Dr. Hawt. I sat down gazing at Creed and took his hand pulling it up to my cheek.

"Ms. Pesch, I was telling everyone that the medication has healed up most of the burns and repaired his internal organs. Now we are ready to see if the drugs were administer in time. Does anyone have any questions?" Dr. Hawt paused before proceeding. "Alright, Dr. Oston turn off the machines."

No one said a word. All eyes glued to the decreasing sounds of the machine and the rise and fall of Creed's chest. I sandwiched his hand in between my palms clasped in prayers position with my eyes closed. I prayed to the goddess to let Creed live, to wake up and come back to me.

The room was eerily silent until pierced by a loud steady tone. My eyes zeroed in on the machine and at once realization hit everyone at the same time. Creed's heart monitor screamed, telling us something noone was ready to accept. Creed's heart had stopped.

"No!" A sob was torn from Creed's mother and sounds of disbelief were tumbling from other family members.

"Get the paddles!" Dr. Oston yelled at the nurses to restart the heart.

"Everyone calm down let's give him a second." Dr. Hawt commanded.

My hand tighten around his and I  watched as his chest no longer moved up and down. I was numb at everyone and everything around me. The noises faded into the background as I stared at Creed's face willing him back to life. I clutched his hand to my breast, images of every interaction we had over the past months. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Open up your eyes. Come back to me!

Someone yanked me away from Creed as his body was swarmed with doctors and nurses. In my haze I watched his body jerked as electricity was forced into his body.

I watched as they frantically tried to revive him, but all I  could hear was that incessant steady tone. His hand that I clutched earlier was swinging limply back and forth on the side of the bed.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep

The sound was getting louder and louder ringing in my ear. I collapsed to the floor covering my ears, trying to block out the sound. I squeezed my eyes shut to block out the image of his hand and stem the tide of tears that were rushing to get out.

"I'm sorry, the injuries were to extensive and my treatment was applied to late." Dr. Hawt announced.

"There's got to be something else you can do. Hook my brother back up to that machine he needs more time!" Colin cried.
