Chapter 19 - Devlin

Chapter 19

As the trio moved forward they fell into a comfortable pace.  The boys stayed at Kaitlin's shoulder showing that she was the one in charge but close enough to be in front of her to protect her if need arose. They plunged forth seeking the object that pulled them all. 

“So do either of you know what it is that is pulling us to it?” Luke inquired after a short bit.

“No not really. We happened to sense this pull and decided to investigate,” Shad thought back to him. 

“I wonder if it pulled the other wolf as well?” Kaitlin questioned the boys, “If it is that might have been our missing other protector.”

Luke pulled up and sniffed around as if to try and catch a scent.  He looked around and suddenly all the wolves spread out as if trying to find the source of a scent.  

“What is it? What did you scent? “Shad demanded as he shifted his stance as if preparing for something.

“We scented my brother in the area. He has been gone for a long time so it is strange his scent would be in this area.”  Luke replied.

“Luke would your brother happen to be Devlin?” Kaitlin inquired almost as if she already knew the answer.

“Devlin is my twin brother. He is about a minute older than me. When it came time for dad to hand over the reins, Devlin and I had to battle each other for the Alpha title. I pinned him fairly quickly but everyone said he hadn't truly even tried. Ever since we happen to be young he withdrew from the family. He seemed to be searching for something. When he and dad visited with your father he came back different changed.  He had become more mature and always focused on training. He quit acting like a normal pup. He would practice for hours and hours. I got to where I would train with him so that I might actually spend time with him. Once he started getting to be so powerful people began to fear him; my twin was my total opposite. He focused on learning to be the biggest and most powerful fighter in the land. About the time that your dad died he went crazy. No one was able to figure out why. He would mope around the house and dad would catch him trying to run away in the middle of the night. He stayed that way till our eighteenth birthday.  On our eighteenth dad had us battle for the Alpha. As soon as it was deemed that I would be Alpha Devlin left. He disappeared and we haven't seen or heard from him since.” Luke dropped his head as if ashamed of what he had just shared with us.

“In the letter from dad he says that Devlin is my other blood protector. If him and your dad were at the ranch when I was taken there that would explain why he changed,” Kaitlin blurted out while processing all the information Luke had just shared.

“To be honest that sounds a lot like me after I blood pledged to be a protector. When I returned to the herd I became much more serious and intent on learning as many fighting and defending methods as possible. When Kaitlin disappeared I went nuts till my parents sent me to find her. Once I found her I came up with a plan to get it to where I lived on the ranch with her and Grims. Once there my chest finally relaxed and I became able to feel again. It was like everything had been sucked out of me till I found her and made sure I had the opportunity to protect and defend her like I vowed. If your brother went through the same as me it must have been truly painful and terrifying for him,” Shad commented back.
