Chapter Two- Dorm 221B

John

I was hardly given time to take in the abrupt (and slightly disappointing) departure of Sherlock Holmes.

“John!” called a voice from behind me. Thinking it must be somebody else (there were probably going to be quite a few Johns here), I ignored it. “John Watson!”

I swivelled around to see a familiar face that I could not quite put a name too- a plump boy with glasses and a broad grin stood in front of me. “Mike! Mike Stamford!” he said, helpfully reminding me of his title.

“Right…” I said, dropping one of my bags to the floor to shake his hand. “Right, sorry- hi, Mike.”

“Yeah, I know- I got fat,” he laughed.

“No, no, you’re… fine,” I replied. “Sorry- I just got here- I’m looking for a prefect…”

“That would be me,” he smiled, pointing proudly at a badge on his jumper. I was pleased to find out that there were at least two people I knew here- well, sort of. “God, look at the state of you,” he looked me up and down, clearly referring to my soaking clothes. “Nice coat.”

“It’s Harry’s.”

“Thought so,” he chuckled. “We’d better get you into the warm then.”

A few minutes later, Mike had led me through twisting corridors that I was already trying hard to map into the sixth form common room. I felt slightly out of place here- not just in this room, but with the whole place in general. I was sitting on top of Harry’s coat on one of the chairs, resting my elbows on the table as Mike walked up to the sixth form cafeteria in the corner to get us both coffees.         The only other people in here were a dark haired boy sitting in a corner, conversing quietly in an Irish accent with a taller, tough-looking brownish-blonde haired boy with flickering eyes.

“Here you are,” he replied, handing me a cup.

“Ta,” I nodded at him. I took a sip, sighing in relief as the warmth spread down my throat and into my stomach.

“So, what brought you here? Last thing I heard from the guys, you were still at army cadets.”

“I got in on a scholarship.”

He lowered his voice. “Short notice?”

“Yeah…”

“They’ve been a bit like that here recently - see, we only got the list of new pupils coming in the other day. When I saw ‘John Watson’, I didn’t think it’d be you- thought you’d still be in London- couldn’t bear to be anywhere else,” he laughed. “That’s the John Watson I know.”

“I’m not the John Watson anybody-” I stopped myself there and changed the subject. “So how many other pupils got in?”

“Just two- they usually let more people in. It might have something to do with what happened last year…”

“What happened last-”

“- We’ll need to get you a room…” he interjected before I had a chance to finish the question. “You have two options- there are a few dorms, but they’ll be moving people around a bit this year so chances are you’ll end up stuck with somebody you really don’t want to be stuck with. Then again, there aren’t many people who don’t have roommates already... Actually, there are two, and one’s a girl so that rules her out. I’ll let you have a look, decide for yourself.”

“C-couldn’t I share with you?”

“Sorry, mate. I got paired up with Henry Knight in my first year…”
