*Chapter Fifteen: I'm tough! See, muscles!*

The next weekend was the night of the homecoming dance. Alex and Miles had been out that week and finally kissed. Alex went over to Caleb's to get ready for the dance. She did her makeup and hair in Caleb's room first and then went to the bathroom to change into her dress. She groaned when she remembered that she couldn't reach the zipper. She walked out of the bathroom and jumped when she saw Jace was waiting outside. He was wearing a black suit with a blue bowtie that matched Amelia's dress. "Oh! Sorry, I didn't know anyone was waiting."

"It's fine. Do you need help with your dress?"

"Oh, yeah, please." She turned around, and felt as he moved a few strands of hair out of the way, before slowly zipping it up. Jace could see the goose bumps on her whenever he brushed her back with his fingers. "There you go," he said when he was done. She smiled, turning around. "Thanks..."

They were really close to each other, their chests almost touching. Suddenly, he whispered, "I know your ass of a boyfriend probably won't tell you this, so I'm going to... You look really beautiful tonight..."

She grinned, a blush forming on her cheeks. "Thanks. You..." she mumbled, straightening his bowtie, "don't look so bad yourself." He chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Thanks... And I picked the right shade of blue for this bowtie?"

"Yes. You and Amelia will look perfect together." He chuckled. "Thanks, Alex. I'm sure that you and what's-his-face will look good together too..." She laughed, rolling her eyes. "Um, thank you I think..." Just then, Caleb's bedroom door opened. He walked out in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, since he wasn't going to the dance. "Hey, I think mom's going to want pictures." They nodded, following him downstairs. When they were done taking pictures, Lucas, Angie, and Caleb included in them, there was a knock at the door. Their mom, Kelli, ran to the door, and turned around, smiling at Alex. "It's Miles!" Alex grinned, turning to face Caleb. "How do I look?" Caleb rolled his eyes, putting his hands on her shoulders. "You look great. Miles will fall in love with you at first sight, so shut up." She laughed. "Thanks Caleb."

She walked over to the door, and opened it, smiling. "Hey Miles!" His eyes grew wide when he saw her. "Hey... Wow, you look great!" She couldn't help but think back to what Jace said. "I know your ass of a boyfriend probably won't tell you this, so I'm going to..." She couldn't believe he was right. Miles didn't call her beautiful... She pushed the thoughts out of her head as he leaned down to kiss her. "Thanks. You look good too." He was wearing a pair of black jeans and a light purple shirt. He wasn't as dressed up as Jace, but she was kind of expecting that. The Sanders always over achieved, even if it was something as simple as dressing up nicer for a dance. "Come in," she said, stepping aside.

He walked in, looking at them. Roger, their dad, was looking at Miles with narrowed eyes. He was just as protective of Alex as he was with Angie, especially because Alex didn't have three big brothers looking out for her too. "Hello, sir," Miles stuttered, holding a hand out for a handshake. Roger shook his hand, squeezing it harder than was necessary. "Okay, pictures!" Kelli said nervously. Alex laughed as she noticed Kelli discretely hitting Roger. Miles wrapped an arm around Alex's waist and they smiled for the picture. She couldn't help but notice Jace glaring daggers at Miles. "Okay, we should go," Alex said, hugging Caleb. She hugged all of them except for Jace, before they left.

"Get her back here by midnight," Roger warned as they were leaving. Miles nodded, "Yes sir..." When they got into the car, they both burst into laughter. "I'm so sorry about them! They're like my second family, and they're a little..."

He smiled, grabbing her hand. "They're like an actual family... I get it, mine's weird too."

When they got to the dance, they were on the dance floor the whole time. During "Lips of an Angel", she finally noticed Jace and Amelia. They were on the dance floor a few feet away. Amelia looked perfect, of course, and they were staring at each other, smiling happily. She watched as Jace pulled her closer, suddenly seeing Alex. He made a face at her and she giggled, making him smile. When the song ended, the DJ said, "Okay, now for this next song we're going to be switching partners." Amelia looked around, and suddenly spotted Alex and Miles. She grinned, pulling Jace over to them. "We can switch!" she said brightly, just as "The Only Exception" came on. Miles and Amelia walked away, leaving Jace and Alex alone. He wrapped his arms around her waist, and she wrapped hers around his neck.

"So, was I right about your boyfriend calling you beautiful?" he asked quietly. She rolled her eyes. "You know, he's not that bad. You're going to have to say something nice about him at one point..."

"I can't say anything nice about a guy that's with you that's not me..." She bit her lip, looking up at him, her eyes shining. "Jace... Amelia's great... That's why you chose her, isn't it?"

He sighed, shaking his head. "I guess so..." he mumbled. Finally, the song ended. They separated as their partners came over. "Hey, so what did you and Amelia talk about?" she asked as Amelia and Jace greeted each other with a kiss. Miles shrugged. "Oh, you know, 'if you break her heart I'll break your face', the usual stuff." She giggled, standing on her tiptoes to kiss him. "Good thing she gave you that speech before I had to..."

"Oh, you'd break my face?"

"You bet your ass I would." He grinned, leaning down to kiss her. "You're cute."

"Hey! I am not cute! I'm tough! See, muscles!" She flexed her arm, which didn't exactly help her case. "Yes sweetie, you're very strong," he said, patting her head. She laughed, pushing his hand away. "Shut up!"

At around eleven, they somehow ended up in the back of his car, making out. She was straddling his lap and he had his hands resting on her butt, which she was kind of freaked out by but she didn't stop him. "God," he groaned, as he moved to leave sloppy kisses on her neck. "You're so hot..." She laughed nervously as she felt something poke her leg, getting off of him. "You know, we should probably go... If we don't get back on time I'm scared of what Roger will do..."

"Oh... Okay," he nodded, getting out of the car. She closed her eyes, sighing. She knew that Miles was disappointed, but she really wasn't ready. She made a mistake with Jace and she didn't want to think having sex with Miles was a mistake too.

They drove back to the house in an awkward silence. When they got there, she leaned over to kiss him lightly on the lips. "I'll see you Monday?" she asked nervously. He smiled, a smile that should have made her heart melt, but for some reason, it didn't. "Yeah babe, I'll see you Monday."
