“You know I care about you ok and I don’t want this to ruin anything.”

“Ok.” I said really fast. My heart was going a million miles and my mind was overflowing with  billions of things he could be about to tell me.

“I’m Andrew’s brother.”

“What?” For a moment I was stunned with his confession. My mind snapped into working mode. Andrew, is Riley’s brother. I connected the dots from there. Andrew is Michelle’s brother. So Michelle and Riley were siblings, and my boss was his father.

“Oh no.” I whispered. Not only was my best friend his sister, he was my boss’s son! The list of consequences were endless.

“Are you ok? You look like your about to be sick again.” His hands reached out to me and I took a step back before they could touch me.

“I need to go.” I brushed past him and he let me go.

Another long day of work. I brushed the hair out of my face as I shut the bedroom door behind me. I walked to past my bed and to the shower. I turned on the water and went back to the bedroom to grab a change of clothes. As I passed my bed a second time my eyes caught something new.

‘What’s this?”

Lying on my bed was a single red rose with a white envelope underneath. I picked up the rose and held it up to my nose. I breathed in and smelled the sweet aroma known as Riley’s cologne.  I gently laid it back down next to the note. I then grabbed the envelope with my name on it, and opened it up.

Dear Kaitlynn,

There is a ball tonight and I was wondering if you would accompany me, if not, I understand…

I will be at the front gate in 2 hours. There is a dress in your closet. You can keep it even if you don’t come.

Sincerely,

Riley

In my closet was a strapless peachy pink dress. Sparkles covered the complete top and the bottom flowed. It was  absolutely beautiful and after I tried it on I couldn’t resist from going.

I met Riley at the gates and we went to the ball together.

The gang was all there. About half way through the night a new prince showed up and joined the party. His name was Christopher.

“Where have you been man? You’ve missed the past 3 parties!” Riley slapped Christopher’s back playfully.

“I was stuck at my castle planning the engagement party. It’s coming up soon and I hadn’t even looked at the list of things Claire wants there. So I had to finally sit down and get it all done.”

When he had finished he looked at me. Riley noticed and introduced us.

“Chris, I would like you to meet my date, Kaitlynn. Kaitlynn, this is Chris.” I curtsied and he bowed.

‘Is this the girl I stopped from running away?”

“Ya.” Riley laughed and hooked his arm around my waist. So this is Chris, the one that had stopped me the day I met Riley. I guess I owe him for me and Riley’s relationship.

About an hour later the ball had died down and Riley wanted to leave. We went to the castle and went to his room.

‘Tell me, why did you become a maid in the first place?” Riley asked. We were lying on his bed looking at the ceiling. We were chatting about simple things.

“Well, my parents gave me up when I was a kid. I lived at an orphanage and got adopted by a couple. The girl was nice but the man was mean. I was their only kid and I loved the woman dearly. She passed away of breast cancer leaving me with the man. He was abusive and I often would find myself getting punched and smacked. I learned to stay away and avoid him. I had only one friend. He was a kid I had met at the orphanage; he got adopted by a family that lived down the street. We would often sneak off together, until I turned 16 and got a job at the old palace, where, until recently, when I was transferred here.”

“I’m sorry, about your parents”

“No need to apologize, it was just how my life was meant to be, I guess.” I shrugged.

Riley wrapped his arms around me and I rested my head on his chest.

“Riley, how long did you know that I was friends with Michelle, and that your dad is my boss?”

“Well, we have known each other for about one month now, which would make it, 2 weeks.”

“Two weeks?!?! You knew that long and you didn’t tell me?!” I sat up straight.

‘Look, I’m sorry. I was scared you would leave, and I was right. You would’ve left.” The pain is his voice was unmistakable.

“Riley.” I lay back down and he hugged me tight.

“I just met you, I didn’t want to lose you already.” He kissed the top of my head. I didn’t know what to say, so I stayed silent. Eventually my silence turned into sleep.
