"Don't try anything stupid" Riley muttered through gritted teeth.

Even if I wanted to try something, which probably would be stupid, I wouldn't dare to cross him as long as he still had that revolver in his possession.

He bent over and gently placed me on his bed. The covers were a vivid crimson made of silk smoother than a babies bottom. The sheets were clean and freshly changed with a hint of laundry detergent still lingering.

He eyed me cautiously as he took a few steps backward before turning to lock the door. I watched feeling helpless as the lock clicked into place. I tried to swallow the fear beginning to consume me, but instead noticed my throat was dry and sore.

Riley walked into his bathroom, not bothering to shut the door on his way. He placed the gun on the counter and looked up to catch eyes with the broken man in the mirror. His head instantly dropped, refusing to accept reality. Instead he turned the faucet on to rinse off his sweaty hands. Before shutting the water off, he splashed water over his sickly pale face. He glanced up at the mirror again, only to find the same empty shell of a man. He sighed and combed his fingers through his hair and stared as his reflection did the same.

I looked away in case he turned to find me watching. Suddenly, I became aware of my surroundings. The room was dark an dreary, with sunlight barely soaking through the midnight colored curtains.  His desk was an absolute mess. The usual neatly stacked towers of papers had been leveled by some sort of tornado. Papers were scattered everywhere. Some crumpled and lounged lazily on the floor. Others were bent and folded just shoved out of the way on the floor while others barely clung to the corners of the desk. The trashcan contained countless empty beer bottles. They overflowed from the metal basket while others had surrounded at the base. His bookshelf was knocked over. Books ripped from the shelves and angrily thrown onto the floor. A few lay open with just fringes remaining of the pages that once occupied that space. As I thought it couldn't get any worse, a gaping hole in the corner of the room poked out from behind the side of a curtain. The floor beneath was a small rug, but a corner was pulled up, revealing blood stains covering the white carpet.

I heard a click and turned my head as Riley locked the bathroom door. Both hands were empty with the gun no where in sight.

My stomach began to twist around in my body as he walked towards me.

"Alone at last." He said as he reached the end of the bed. He towered over me as I looked up feeling completely vulnerable to him.

He bent down, making us eye level. He placed a hand on my knee and I jumped at his touch.

"Shhhh," He cooed. "I'm not going to hurt you baby."

His other hand reached up to my face, to caress my icy cheek . By now my heart was violently pounding as my head was rapidly drowning in confusion.  He leaned in for a kiss and I turned away instantly.

"Hey, look at me."

I refused but didn't have much of a choice as he moved his hand to my chin.

"Kaitlynn."

My heart shriveled at the sound of my name coming from his lips. He spoke softly, as if speaking to a child. He turned my head, making my eyes meet his.

"It's going to be okay."

Tears began to flood my eyes and I blinked furiously to hold them back.

"Baby, please don't cry."

At that point, my body chose to give up the fight as the tears broke the dam and rushed down.  My chest filled with a sharp, tight pain. It felt as though my lungs were made of metal, as breathing became harder and harder. I looked down, ashamed for him to see me like this  after all this time. It had been at least a week, and I should've been slightly recovered by now. Instead I felt more broken than before.

A sniffle broke the silence but it didn't come from my nose. I glanced up to find tears flowing from his eyes as well.

"I'm so sorry Kaitlynn." His voice shook as he lost all composure. "I love you so much."

The left over air circulating around my iron lungs pushed out as the breathe was shoved out of me. I cried out and surrendered myself to the feelings.

With tears streaming down both of our faces, we reached for one another. His arms wrapped around my upper body once again as I clung to as much of him as I could. Our foreheads and noses greeted one another after a long time of no communication.

We cried, cleansing our souls of the pain, hurt, and sadness that had manifested over our hearts. We were an absolute mess as we both emptied all emotions from deep within the locked holes in our hearts.

Time became irrelevant as the moment controlled the universe around us. It wasn't until our wells ran dry that we acknowledged the orange glow seeping through the curtains. Neither one of us pulled away, trying to extend the moment.

Our muscles began to ache from our positions. Riley crawled onto the bed and pulled me against him. I accepted the invitation and rested my head on his chest while his chin relaxed on top of my head. We laid there, the world revolving around us. It was silent besides the sounds of his heartbeat pounding against my ear. It played its own music for me as I listened to the rhythm contently. For the first time in an endless dark tunnel, I had felt truly safe once again.

Before we knew it, night had dawned as the moon released the stars to light up the world. Sleep began to tug at me and I didn't resist as it pulled me under.

A bright light beat against my eyes and a hot, burning sensation radiated from the center of my face. I cracked an eye open and shut it immediately as white light rushed in. I tried to turn over, away from the rude awakener, but found myself held down. I remembered the day before and instantly filled with shame. I had given into him once again. I blindly wiggled my way free from Riley's arms and snuck to the bathroom to wash up.

I turned on the sink and threw water on my face to snap me awake. I yawned away the last of my drowsiness and dried my face with the hand towel hanging within arms reach. I walked from the bathroom feeling refreshed with a better attitude than what I had awoken with.

The good feeling instantly flew south as my eyes landed on a man standing before me. Before anything could register in my head, I opened my mouth to scream. A gloved hand shot out and muffled my shriek.

I stared at the intruder in front of me, face to face. His emerald eyes were as wide as mine felt and he looked just as shaken up as well. It wasn't until I spotted a freshly made breakfast plate lying on the night stand by the bed that my mind finally caught up with the action. This wasn't just any stranger, it was Riley's butler.

The strong scent of maple syrup drifted from the pancakes into the air. Riley smelled the food, and I clearly herd his stomach rumble. His eyes opened and he sat up while stretching. Last night's events ran through his head and his eyes shot open in search of me. He found me instantly as I stood across the room with my oxygen flow being cut off.

I looked past the butler and my eyes met with Riley's. Our secret wasn't about to stay a secret for long.
