I counted many more than I remembered there being. Then I remembered that I had an addition built onto the house in 1887. The hours passed and by the end of the day I thought I would go mad with anticipation for the boy to return. The sun set and the boy still had not returned. What could be taking him? I began to get worried that they had caught on to him and had taken him. I heard the door open and I ran to it. The boy entered the looking the same as when he left.
“Did you see or learn anything?” I asked anxiously.
The boy shook his head. “Everything looked normal. I go there all the time and nothing was out of place.”
I nodded my head accepting his bad news. “Thank you. Would you be willing to do this again for me tomorrow?”
“Sure sir.”
After that the boy went home. Most of the staff comes here every day, but a few have asked to live here and I allow them too. I tried to get a couple hours of sleep that night but I could not do it. I had become so accustomed to sleeping next to Navia, and anything without her did not feel right. I paced around the room furious. For hours that was all I did. The sun rose and slowly the staff began to assemble. The boy arrived at eight o’clock. I pulled into my study and told him the next place I wanted him to check for me. He took off and again I was in agony the whole day, waiting and hoping, for his return. That night he came home and his response was the same he did not see anything out of the normal. That night was even worse.
My anger and rage seemed to double, but I was also weaker. I wanted to fight and I wanted to hit someone but the only things around me were inanimate objects. I threw a couple lamps against the walls and broke a couple tables but my rage was still there. I clawed at the walls tearing away the wood, and the only door still in its frame was the one that lead out to the hallway. I could not make the rage go away. In the morning the elderly maid that answered the phone came into the spare room. I was looking out the window, with my back turned to her.
“Are you alright sir?”
“No” I answered in a rough voice.
“Navia is still away?”
I whirled around and yelled “She was taken from me and is being held captive.” I glared at her.
“I’m sorry sir, it isn’t my place.” She kneeled down and began to pick up the shards of one of the lamps I broke.
“It is fine. I find myself in a foul disposition lately.”
“It is very understandable sir.” Suddenly the smell of blood filled the room. My fangs extended and I flashed over to her side. She looked up at me with wide eyes. She had a deep cut on her finger. I crouched down next to her. I took her hand in mine and examined the wound.
“It does not look too bad” I said in a raspy voice. “Have someone disinfect it for you, then wrap it tightly.” I let her hand go. She was looking at me with scared eyes. “Go” I urged her. She got up from the floor and scurried out the door. I went back to the window and stared out at the trees that surrounded the house.
These trees have been here since I had this house built. They have not changed. I remember looking out at these trees back in 1887. I watched that woman walk down my driveway. She looked back at the house and I saw her tears rolling down her cheeks. I never saw her again. These trees have stood strong through all of these years.
