Lucas and I danced a lot that night. Mostly we dance during slow songs but I convinced him to dance to a few fast songs. He looked a little uncomfortable but he was a very good dancer. At twelve o’clock I was sitting at a table eating some food. Ryan came over and sat next to me. He took a strawberry from my plate and ate it.

“Hey, go get your own” I said playfully.

He smiled at me and said “How have you been Navia?” His eyes were gentle. I don’t remember them being like this at the institute.

“You’ve changed so much.” Ryan laughed and rubbed the back of his head.

“Yeah I guess I have” he chuckled. “Don’t tell anyone, I don’t want to lose my street cred.” I laughed at him.

“You and Ryan are friends?” a voice asked behind me. I turned around and Ryan’s Demon Cameron was behind me.

“Yeah we went to the same institute.”

He nodded his head and smiled at me. “We shall be living half an hour from here. I am glad to know that Ryan will have a friend that is close. I sometimes worry that my Myxs get lonely.”

“How can they be lonely, they have you?”

“I feel that if you are with someone for a long time they became a part of you and they do not feel like company anymore.”

I was thinking about what he was saying when I heard a loud thud. I looked around to see if anyone had fallen or if anything had broken. The Demons were looking at the door with hard faces. Then I heard Lucas’ voice in my head calling me to him. I got up and when I was halfway to him the door burst open. What now? There were several men with guns and other weapons running in the door. I was frozen in my spot. Lucas flashed to my side and pushed me behind him. I peeked around him at the men.

“Get out of this house” Lucas commanded with a scary voice. A chill ran down my spine.

“We have some business to take care of before we leave.” A man standing in the middle was talking. He was going bald and only had some dark brown hair on the side of his head. He looked like he was in his mid-forties and had bags under his eyes like he hadn’t slept in a few days. He was holding a shot gun with one hand. The other was behind his back. That really isn’t a smart thing to do.

An awful growl vibrated up Lucas’ throat and rang through the room. I heard his fangs descend. “You have no right to do business here. Leave now or I will throw you out in pieces.” Lucas growled again.

The man didn’t look scared or even anxious. He looked calm and at ease. He has something planned. Something he feels so absolute about that he isn’t even worried. “My business is not with you Demon. The governor and I have some things to discuss.” One of his men stepped out and headed towards a man in a black suit. Before he could even get close a Demon raced out and killed him. He ripped off the man’s arm and stabbed him in the heart with the man’s arm. I flinched and backed up a little. Lucas grabbed my arm and pulled me back to him. I started to breathe hard. “I was hoping that it wouldn’t come to violence. I will give you one more chance. Give me the governor and no one has to get hurt.”

Lucas laughed a dark laugh. It was nothing like the sweet laugh I was so used to. I wanted to leave him but at the same time I couldn’t let go of him. “This will be fun then. Demons get your fill, we were attacked first there will be no punishment.” I looked around the room. Most of the Demons were staring at the humans with their fangs down and hungry gazes.

“Fine you push my hand.” Right as the Demons were about to spring into action the man pulled the hand he had behind his back forward and revealed a feather. There was something red on the front of it but I was too far away to see what it was. Lucas dropped to the floor. But it wasn’t just Lucas, every Demon fell to the floor. They were all laying there with blank faces. I kneeled next to Lucas and lifted his head. His eyes looked dead, like there was nothing there. My eyes began to water.

“Lucas” I whispered. “Lucas, Lucas,” Every time I said his name it got louder.  “Lucas, Lucas, LUCAS!” I yelled. He didn’t move. Tears streamed down my cheek. I screamed as loud as I could. My whole body was shaking. With fear, sadness, or anger I wasn’t sure. I stood up and stared at the men.

The balding man sighed. “I forgot this doesn’t work on Myxs, or should I say half breeds.” His face crinkled, and his tone was one of disgust when he said ‘half breeds’.

I stepped forward and bared my teeth at him. “Myxs” I yelled. Then I lowered my voice. “Fight with me.” I saw Myxs stand up all around the room. “Fight with me to protect them all” I yelled.

Tears were still rolling down my cheek and I ran at them. Myxs followed after me and we attacked the humans. I went after the balding man. He dropped his gun and fought hand to hand with me. Thank god I took combat at the institute. He was a better fighter than me but I was faster than him. He easily out maneuvered me but I was so fast I could block his punches. He mainly threw punches at me but once in a while we would kick his foot up. In one move he tried to hit me but missed and when to a kick. I blocked the punch and ducked under his leg. In that moment he left himself unguarded and I finally landed a good punch on him and he went flying back.

He hit another human and they both hit the wall. There was fighting everywhere. I walked around the fighting to finish my fight with the balding man. When I was at the wall there was only one man, and it wasn’t the bald man. Where did he go? Cloth came over my mouth. I struggled against it, but whoever it was had a hold of my head. An odd smell filled my nose. It smelled sweet and got sweeter with every inhale. My vision was getting blurry and things were getting quieter. My legs were feeling weak and I was feeling tired. I passed out.
