Slowly I walked up to the doors they stood in front of. I peered inside one door. Claude was lying in a bed, his eyes closed. His eyes popped open as if he had felt my gaze. He looked at me and a smile came to his lips.
I smiled at him but didn’t go inside. I went to the next room and looked in. It was empty. I went to the other side of the hall and looked in the rooms. They were all empty. I went down the whole hall, and everyone was empty. Where’s Lucas? He should be down here too. My breathing picked up.
The Demon that was on watch stepped in front of me. His eyes looked crazy, and his fangs were down. Oh crap. He stepped real close to me. His eyes seemed focused on my neck. I can’t call to Claude he’s still hurt. Fear rose in my chest. He grabbed my chin and tilted my head so he had a clear view of my neck. He brushed my hair away. He opened his mouth and leaned in. I felt his breath on my neck and tears ran down my cheeks. I really don’t want to be bitten.
Then he was gone. I heard a scream, and its echo as it rang through the halls. I looked over to see Lucas with a tight hold of the Demon’s neck. Lucas looks so much better. The scratches and tears were gone from his face. His wings were out and there was a bandage around one of them. They don’t look the same. Before they were erect and held high on Lucas’ back, now they’re limp. They aren’t the dark wings that looked so beautiful before. They look sad. Lucas was squeezing on his neck and it looked very painful from the face the Demon was making.
My heart was pounding and I felt weak. I can’t believe my eyes. Is he actually standing after just a few hours since he crashed? It can’t be possible. Lucas looked dead. He can’t be standing there.
He threw the Demon and he crashed against the wall. He quickly got up and ran away. I stared at Lucas. He turned and looked at me. His eyes were bright like the first time I saw him.
My legs couldn’t hold me and I went falling to the ground. Lucas caught me and gently lowered me to the floor. The tears running down my cheeks seemed like they couldn’t fall fast enough because they kept coming. Lucas wrapped his arms around me. I cried for a while and Lucas just held me. He’s alive. I’m touching him. He’s really here.
“Navia what are you doing down here?” he asked, his voice soft. Hearing his voice made me cry harder. “Shhhhh” he soothed. He pulled away and made me look at him. “Did he hurt you?” I shook my head.
I pulled myself together enough so I that I could speak. “Are you alright?” My voice was shaky and sounded weird.
“I shall be fine. I just need a little more time for my wing to heal.”
“Don’t you ever do that again?” He just looked at me and smiled. “I’m serious, don’t you ever stay and fight. You come with me where I can watch over you.” He laughed and I could the feel his joy. It was like it was in the air.
“Navia you should not be down here.” I looked behind Lucas to see Professor Marsden. “Lucas I see you are recovering nicely.” He stood up and lifted me to my feet. “We need to talk.”
Professor Marsden took me to her office, where she drilled me about everything I knew. After half an hour of questions she told me I could go. I went back to my dorm where Sara was waiting. I told her the great news that both Lucas and Claude were fine. The institute had canceled classes that day. At the end of the day Professor Marsden called an assembly in the auditorium. She just explained what had happened the night before. Thankfully she didn’t mention my name anywhere in her explanation.
