Finding You

Chapter ~~12

“Yeah I can. Just don’t do it again.”

Caleb smiled. “Promise.”

Lucas came back and we had fun. The day went by and Caleb was fun to have around. The next day Lucas had to run into town, and take care of some business.  He was anxious with leaving me but I told him I would be fine. Still uncertain he gave me a kiss and then he left. For a while I did little things but I got bored and I went to the kitchen looking for someone to talk to. In there was Caleb. He looked like he had just gotten up though it was two in the afternoon. He only had pants on and he was drinking a glass of blood. I went over and stood next to him.

“Late night?” I asked. He nodded his head. “Rest will make you feel better. You should go sleep. Even demons need sleep.”

Caleb shook his head. “I am fine, I just need some refreshment to perk me up.” He looked away from me but I could still see his profile.

I looked at his face and I saw purple bags under his eyes. “Caleb,” he looked at me, “when was the last time you got some sleep?”

He lifted one eyebrow and looked to the ceiling. “Oh about four weeks, so almost a month.”

“Caleb you need sleep.” I grabbed his hand and tried pulling him. But he was a lot stronger than me and he didn’t move an inch.

“Navia I am fine, I do not require as much sleep as you do.”

“I already know that, and I also know that Demons need more sleep than what you’ve been getting.” I tried pulling again but he wasn’t budging. “Do I have to call Lucas home and make him carry you up to your room?” Caleb sighed and tossed back the rest of his blood and then put the empty glass on the counter. He let me pull him and in his room I made him lye down. For a while he just laid there looking at me. “You have to close your eyes.”

“No” he said quickly. I was confused by his reaction.

“Caleb what’s-”

“Enough this is stupid” he said cutting me off. He got up and I stood in front of the door. He stood in front of me glaring. “Navia move, I am not going to get any sleep right now.”

“No” I said stubborn. He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language.

“Navia I-” He stopped when I put my hands on his face. I made him look at me and I saw the fear in his eyes.

“What’s wrong Caleb? Why are you scared?”

He looked in my eyes for a minute but then he looked away and he licked his lips. “I am not scared. I am just not tired.” He looked back me and his eyes were wavering. I looked up at him confused and gentle. He was like an injured puppy.

“Caleb you can tell me. I promise I will help you in any way I can.”

He sighed and I saw surrender in his eyes. “It is Camille. She has not been chasing me for just a few weeks. It has been more like months.” I grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze. “I can’t…I can’t keep running like this. Every place I go she finds me and destroys any kind of a home I make. The last time I slept she found me and nearly killed me. I barely got away and ever since when I close my eyes I see her snarling face trying to kill me.” He grabbed my other hand and squeezed. “Navia I am about ready to just give in and let her kill me.”

“Don’t think that.” He looked at me startled. “Caleb every life is worth living, even if it’s tortured you have to stick through it because at the end of that torture there is a light. There is an ending that is so perfect that it makes it worth fighting through all the pain.” He leaned down and rest his forehead against mine. “You can do this I know you can.” Caleb took a deep breath and when he exhaled his breath washed over my face. It felt a little weird because it wasn’t Lucas but Caleb was definitely feeling better. “Now you need to get some sleep.”
