“It’s just a little weird seeing you like this.”
“Do I look different?”
“No not really but you’re bonded. How does it feel?”
“Amazing” was all I could think of to describe it.
The feeling I have standing next to Lucas is beyond words. It feels like I can’t live without him. Like he is the one and only person that could make me happy.
“You called” Lucas said as he walked in our room. He was holding some flattened boxes. I hurried over to his side. The pain in my head went away and I relaxed against him. “These are for you. You need to pack because we leave tonight.”
“You’re leaving?” Sara said sadly.
“Yes I’m sorry Sara.” Sara ran over to me and gave me a hug.
My time here would have been miserable if I hadn’t met Sara. She became a best friend to me.
“I will miss you so much. Maybe we will visit sometime.” I looked to Lucas. He was looking away from me with clouded eyes. What’s upsetting him? “Well let’s go pack.” I nudged Lucas and his attention snapped back to me. He smiled and we went into my room. Once he closed the door I asked him “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I was just debating which house to take you to.”
“Nice try but I know you’re lying to me.”
Lucas chuckled. “This may take some getting used to.” Lucas and I spent the rest if the day packing my things. We had everything packed by five, well everything except that damn box I got from the funeral.
“What is in here?” Lucas asked.
“I don’t know” I admitted.
“You do not know? You just had this unknown box sitting in your room?”
“I got that box from the funeral. It’s the stuff that the firemen salvaged from the fire.”
“You have not opened it?”
“No I opened it.
“So how do you not know what is inside of it?”
“When I opened it I could only see one thing and then” I stopped and looked at the ground. I can remember the pain from seeing that gray sweater. “Then I couldn’t take anymore.” Lucas looked at me with loving eyes.
“I think you should look inside right now.”
“No” I answered quickly.
“Listen you are only two days into our bond. In the beginning it is said that you are the most like a Demon. I can take the pain away from you. You will not feel the pain of losing them, only the joy of remembering them” he assured me.
It’s very tempting. It would be wonderful if I could think about them without breaking down in tears.
I nodded my head. He pushed the box over to me. I dove right into the box knowing if I waited I would lose my resolve. At the top of the box there was my mother’s gray sweater. I took a deep breath and took it out of the box. Under the sweater there was the framed picture of all us that used to hang in the stairway.
