I grabbed my schedule, keys, notebooks, and left. I walked into the first building. There was a sign hung from the wall with directions. From the sign I learned that the first number of the room number indicated what floor the room was on. I took the elevator to the third floor and found my room. I took a deep breath fighting my nerves and entered the room. The room was average size with cream walls. There was a desk and computer in the front of the room. Behind those the wall was covered by white boards. The rest of the room was filled with desks.

About half the desks were filled with people. I saw Demons and Myxs all around the room. I saw one face, in the crowd that I knew. Ryan was sitting in the back of the room, staring blankly up at the board. I walked over towards him. His head snapped in my direction. He gave me a small smile and a nod. I took that as his hello. I sat down in the seat next to him. Right then a man entered the room. He was carrying a briefcase and a brown jacket. He introduced himself as Mr. Williams.

He made a big fuss of introducing me to the class. He made me stand up and come to the front of the room. I had to announce my name, and then he proceeded to ask me questions about myself. How stupid. They don’t care that I’m new here and I don’t want to talk about myself. I said as little as possible. Eventually he let me sit back down and we started class. The rest of class flew by, and before I knew it I was walking out. I was really interested in what Mr. Williams was teaching. I didn’t know why but everything he was saying just sounded so fascinating. I headed to the dining hall. Since I have a couple hours, before my next class, I decided to go get something to eat.

Ryan caught up with me out in the hall. “So how was your first class?” his voice was sarcastic, mimicking a curious mother. I looked at him, not amused. His blue eyes were calm.

“Not bad” I said. We rode the elevator in silence until I broke it outside of the building. “I’m going to go get some lunch. Do you want to come with?” Ryan is so easy to talk to. With him I don’t have to watch every last thing I say.

            “Yeah” he replied.

The dining hall wasn’t too crowded. Ryan and I sat down at an empty table, with our food, and ate in comfortable silence. We were about to leave when Brandon snuck up behind me.

“Hello Navia.” I turned around recognizing the voice. He smiled at me and my heart stopped for a second.

“Hey Brandon” I managed to say.

            “Can I sit with you?”

            “Of course”

Brandon immediately sat down with me. I looked to Ryan who was sitting across from me. His expression had completely changed since Brandon sat down. Before he was at ease and relaxed, now it was tense and on the edge.

What’s Ryan’s problem? Does he not like Brandon? Does he even know Brandon? Maybe Ryan doesn’t like Demons. If that’s true this must be really hard for Ryan. Being here, being a Myx. He must struggle every day, dealing with what he is.

“I’ve got to get to class” he said basically jumping out of his seat. His body was stiff, his muscles were tense like he was clenching his fist. “Bye Navia” he said rushed. He looked me right in the eyes and his blue eyes were apologetic and scared. Is Ryan scared of Demons? He got up from the table.

“Ummm….okay. I’ll-” Ryan left, without even letting me finish my sentence. I watched as he walked away with obvious hurry in his step.
