“Is that all?”
“What do you mean is that all?” Lucas looks flabbergasted.
“Lucas you just harassed my doctor. He didn’t do anything.”
“He might have. I could not let him treat you while he finds you attractive.”
“Lucas you can’t control people like that.” My voice was getting louder.
“Yes I can, if I do not want someone around you then I will make sure they stay away from you.” Lucas was starting to raise his voice as well.
“No you can’t. You don’t own me, and you can’t control people around me. Maybe other people let you but I won’t.”
“Navia, you do not…”
“No you don’t understand,” I interrupted him “I don’t like that Lucas. Controlling people and black mailing them, like you just did with Dr. Maston, is wrong. Maybe you’re too old and corrupt to realize this but I’m not.”
“I have to protect you from the people that might harm you. If that means toying with a few humans, so be it. They are humans, they are insignificant. I use them so I survive. I must protect you as well.”
“Lucas” I was almost shouting at him. “Humans are beings that deserve respect. You can’t treat us that way.”
“Navia,” he shouted “You are not human.”
Something inside of me snapped. “Lucas get out” I shouted. Then I lowered my voice to just above a whisper. “Get out of this room, get out of my sight, and get out of my life.”
Lucas looked at me and I saw regret in his eyes but I was so mad I didn’t care. Lucas rose from the bed and walked out the door. How dare he say that to me? He can’t just use people like that. If that’s what Lucas is like I want nothing to do with him. Ah, I’m so angry I could spit. Tears began to run down my cheeks. How could he be such a jerk to me? I began to cry just at the thought of Lucas’ cruelties. For the rest of the day I was left alone, until about seven when Dr. Maston walked back in again.
“Hello Navia” he said in a shaky voice. I said nothing and just looked at him. “About what happened earlier…” he paused “I’m sure that Lucas told you what I was thinking.” He looked at me, his eyes saturated with hope. Hope, I guess, that I didn’t know.
“Yes, Lucas told me.”
His eyes fell, and the hope drained from them. “I do find you very attractive, but I would never act upon those impulses while I was treating you as a patient.”
“I know. I’m sorry for what Lucas did. He shouldn’t have called you out like that.”
“Do you still want me to be your doctor?”
“Yes I have nothing against you.”
“Okay then let’s get down to business. You have been informed that you’re a Myx.”
“Yes.”
“You must also be aware that your house caught on fire.” My whole body froze and I nodded. Dr. Maston looked very uncomfortable. “The firemen were able to get you out of the house in time.” He swallowed hard. I’m not sure he’s going to be able to finish whatever speech he plans on giving me. “I’m sorry to say that they couldn’t save the rest of your family.” This makes no sense. my room is at the end of the hall. My room is the farthest from the stairs. Why would they start with my room? I began to have flashbacks of my family. With Vicki gone it feels like part of me is missing. A tear ran down my cheek. Quickly I brushed it away hoping that Dr. Maston didn’t see it. “They died in the fire.” He froze, most likely waiting for me to crumble, and burst into tears. Well it wasn’t going to happen. I wasn’t going to break down in front of him. “We have enrolled you in the nearest Myx Institute. It’s like a boarding school, so you will be living there. I’m so sorry for your loss.”
