“You need to learn your strength” he said teasingly. He took my hands out of his hair. Then it hit me that I pulled on his hair too hard.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” I feel terrible that I hurt him.

“It is okay, you have yet to learn the extent of your strength. Soon you will be taught control. Be glad I am not human, then you would have had some problems” he said with a little chuckle.

“Why?” What exactly does he mean?

“Since I am a Demon I can tell how much power you were just using. If you had used that much force on a human, there would have been some bloodshed.” Oddly enough, he smiled as he said this. “Demons are tougher than humans by a lot. Our skin is stronger and will not cut as easily. We also do not feel pain as easily as humans do. So you used quite a lot of force to even get me to feel pain.” That same smile stayed on his lips.

“Tell me about Myxs.”

“Myxs are basically what fantasy would describe as half Demons. Myxs have some of a Demon’s power, but they still have human characteristics. Every Myx has a different amount of power, but usually they only have approximately 25 percent of a Demons power. Myxs have tougher skin and are stronger than humans, but are not as strong as Demons. Myxs that are fully trained have extreme focus when it comes to dealing with humans. They are so very fragile.” When he said that I heard distain in his voice. “So when you just let go and felt…” he paused and looked unsure. He seemed to be struggling to find the right words. “…just freed your mind, the Demon power in you took over. Over time we train our minds to overpower the Demon within us, to obey us, and do what we wish of them. Demons are cruel and will kill without hesitation. So we must control them.”

That was the biggest speech I had heard Lucas give. I’ve learned so much from him. My mind was buzzing with new information. Though I’d been given new things to think about I still wanted to learn more.

“Tell me more.” I said quietly. Lucas looked at me with a frown on his face. This doesn’t seem like something Lucas likes to talk about. I need to know though. I gave him a quick kiss. It left me a little dizzy and wanting more but I held back. “Please” I asked as gently as I could.

He sighed in surrender and told me some amazing things about Myx and Demon culture and behavior. Myxs and Demons share their powers between special bonds. Certain genes in humans match with a certain Demon, and they become bonded. When a Myx and a Demon unite, both of their powers increase. Demons crave power, they continually strive to gain more and increase their own. There are only two ways for Demons to increase their power. 1. Find their Myx and bond. 2. Kill another Demon by drinking their blood.  Demons don’t usually do the second one. Demons are for the most part civil towards their own. They would also be punished for killing another Demon.

Demons not only contribute to human society, but they have their own government. They have laws and restrictions as to what they can and can’t do or face punishment. From the limited information that Lucas told me Demons sounded very official and organized. I’m not sure how long they have been together but their government has been around since before they came out of hiding.

Demons have to drink blood to survive. They don’t have to kill the humans they feed off of. They can feed little by little and have the ability to only take what they need. Many Demons that don’t want to hunt for their meals go to blood banks and buy their blood. Since Demons came out, a law was passed making it illegal for Demons to bite and drink from a human without their consent.

Since Demons came out the crime rate and unsolved murder cases have decreased by a lot. But every so often there will be a murder and it’ll be clear from the cause of death that a Demon lost control and drained a human. Frightened people have been pushing for a law that states that if any Demon kills a human they should be punished just as any human would. I feel that would be the fair thing to do, but I can’t see how that would work. Demons are stronger and much faster than humans, how are the police planning on actually catching Demons. If a Demon didn’t want to go to jail it wouldn’t be very hard for them to avoid some human cops. I don’t know if the law will get passed, but I have a bad feeling that if it does the Demons won’t be happy about it.

Lucas was explaining the life of Demons when someone walked into my hospital room. It was a new doctor. He was short with short blonde hair. It was just after four o’clock and I was feeling very antsy. Lucas and I moved so there was more space between us. His name tag clipped to his shirt said his name was Dr. John Maston.

“Hello, I’m Dr. Maston, and I’m going to be your new doctor. How are you feeling today?” he asked enthusiastically.

“I’m fine thanks for asking” Lucas said with a smart ass grin.

“I was talking to her” the doctor said to Lucas unfazed by his attitude. “How are you?” he looked me over.

“I’m fine, except my head hurts a little bit.”

“Okay. We need to run a couple tests, so Lucas you are going to have to leave the room for a few minutes.”

Lucas moved to get out of the bed, but I grabbed his arm stopping him. “No don’t leave, I need you.” Lucas was about to say something when the doctor cut him off.

“Navia, you’re going to have to be naked for a couple of these tests so-” he stopped looking uncomfortable. I could feel my cheeks warming and most likely turning a pink color, just at the thought of Lucas being in the room with me while I was naked.

“Oh” I said as I let go of Lucas’ arm “Lucas get out.”

“I would like to stay now.” I punched him in the arm and pointed to the door. “Owww” he complained. “What have I told you about your strength?” I smiled at him sweetly.  He got out of the bed and without a word he left the room.

Then the tests started. It wasn’t a few simple, quick tests either. They were long, boring, and tedious. I was stuck by needles, and scanned by big noisy machines. I was examined by doctors and nurses for hours. I was picked and prodded. They asked me questions about how I felt and what I remembered. And they just went on and on, until finally they finished. They took me back to my room and left me there to rest. I checked the clock on the wall, it was almost midnight. Dr. Maston is the only person left in my room.

“Well tonight I’ll look over your test results and get back to you tomorrow. Do you want me to send in Lucas?” he asked.

“Yeah” I whispered. He nodded as he walked out the door.

I tried to stay awake to see Lucas but I was exhausted. All those tests took all the energy I had. Almost immediately after he left I fell asleep. I had another nightmare, and unfortunately I remembered it. I was in my room and I was surrounded by fire. I couldn’t move. Then I began to hear screaming. It was Vicki, she was probably stuck in her room as well. I wanted to help her, but I couldn’t even get out of my own room. I was scared and trapped. The whole house must have been on fire. I began to cry and scream out to her, to anyone. I saw eyes outside my window. I could see nothing outside in the dark sky except for these eyes staring at me. I reached out for them, begging for help.

I woke up sweating, and the sheets were thrown around. I looked around the room. Where am I? Fear overtook me, and I jumped out of my bed. I felt a tugging on my arm. There is a needle inserted into the inside of me elbow.  It was connected to a tube leading to a machine. Why am I in a hospital? Quickly I ripped the needle out of my arm, freeing me from the machine. There was a pain in my arm so I looked down at it and saw blood pouring out. I ran out of the room. I stumbled into the hallway. The lights are bright and blinding. I covered my eyes with my hand. I stood for a moment waiting for my eyes to adjust. Once I could see I looked around trying to find an escape. I heard voices everywhere. It felt like people were screaming in my ears. My head began pounding. There is so much noise. I covered my ears with my hands, trying to block out some of the noise.  I need to escape this terrible place. So I ran.
