“No they won’t.” I said quietly. My eyes began to sting, and I felt the tears trying to spill over. “My family…” I paused. My throat was closing up and sobs were trying to break through. I pushed them back. “..they… they left me.” Tears began to pour down my cheeks.
“I am very sorry to have upset you. Please forgive me.”
“No I’m fine” I said as I brushed away my tears.
For a while we just sat there in silence. I could feel Lucas’ eyes on me but I couldn’t look at him. Tears continuously ran down my cheeks, no matter how many times I brushed them away. I began to feel hot, like my whole body was burning up. Lucas put a hand on my cheek and moved my head so I looked at him. His eyes were understanding, and gentle. He took a tissue out of his pocket and wiped the tears from my face. He was so gentle the tissue felt like feathers being brushed across my face. I turned my face away from him.
When I look at him I feel normal. I don’t deserve that. My pain goes away, and I forget about my family. I can’t forget about them. Not Vicki, not mom, not dad. I survived and they didn’t.
“Navia, anyone who leaves you is a fool.”
“Stop it.” My voice began to shake and I stared at the floor.
“No Navia, I am completely serious, you are-”
“Stop it!” I turned and yelled interrupting him. “You don’t understand, my family is gone, they’ve been taken from me. I’ll never see any of them again. I’m on my own.” I let my sobs overtake me and I began to truly cry. The pounding in my head only got worse.
“You are wrong Navia, you are not on your own I am here. I will stay with you.” He looked me right in the eyes and said “Always.” He pulled me into his chest, and wrapped his arms around me so I was secure. For a while he just held me and I let him. My sobs shook my whole body and Lucas held me tighter. Lucas’ frigid body helped cool me down. My tears finally came to an end and I pulled away from Lucas.
“Thank you.” I said. My head hurt terribly. It felt like something was thrashing around in my head.
Lucas stood up. He held out his hand, and I took it. I got to my feet and nearly fell right back down. As soon as I got up I began to feel really dizzy. I felt like I couldn’t stand and my legs couldn’t hold me and I just dropped. Luckily Lucas caught me, and held me steady. “Navia are you alright?”
My head was spinning and my legs felt shaky. I couldn’t respond so I closed my eyes and waited. After a couple minutes, I felt a bit better. My legs at least felt like they could carry my weight. Slowly I stood straight up and only my head was pounding.
I put my hand on my forehead. “Yes, thank you again” I said quietly.
“Navia, you need to let the doctors take a look at you.”
I wanted to protest but my head hurt. “Maybe you’re right.”
Lucas led me back to main part of the hospital. There was a large rounded counter with a sign over it that read Nurses Station. There were three nurses seated inside the counter, each one with a different hair color. One had red hair, one was a blonde, and the other had light brown hair. The nurses saw us and rushed over. They surrounding me, asking questions and pushing me forward. In all the commotion from the nurses, Lucas got pushed behind me. Their constant noise is so annoying.
“Stop!” I demanded. The nurses froze.
“Hon’,” the blonde said with thick southern accent “we need to get ya back inta ya’s room. Ya weren’t supposed to leave.” She stood behind me, and gave me little nudge forward.
