The cold morning air bit at my lungs, the warm coffee in my hands doing nothing against the late September weather. The smell was almost intoxicating, though, distracting me from how chilled it was. People rushed around us, trying to get to their destinations. We walked slowly though, enjoying what we could of the time we had.

"He's a mess about it." Elena mumbled into her coffee, her voice muffled and strained. Almost like she had been crying. She probably had been- the whole town was reeling from another animal attack.

I nodded slowly, adjusting my thumb around the strap of my backpack "Anyone would be," I said soothingly "Do you know how she's doing?"

Elena shook her head no, her brown eyes glancing up at Matt. The blonde haired boy stared down at his hands, not giving a second thought about anything around him. He was worried about his sister, that much apparent.

"Matt hasn't said much other than..." She trialed off "It's rather insane really. He said Vicki woke up screaming the other night, said something about Vampires."

I stopped in my tracks, cocking my head to the side. Shit. This could be a problem, in fact, it would become one very quickly. Vicki seemed like a smart enough girl- one to know that what she saw wasn't fiction. Her attacker had fucked up, leaving her alive after a brutal feeding.

"Really? Vampires?"

"Mm" Elena nodded taking another big gulp of coffee. "Weird right? Maybe it's the morphine."

"I'm sure that's exactly what it is" I gave her a smile "Come on, we should get to class."

The screaming was something that quickly took me off guard, making my hair stand up on end as the loud sound of struggle pounded against my eardrums. I halted, my heart pounding against my ribs. The sweet scent of the flowers was thick in my lungs, contrasting with the rough dread of the atmosphere. I never really understood why people brought flowers to hospitals. They reminded me of death, especially with the amount of them littered across marble headstones.

I pressed my back against the corner of the hallway, holding my breath as Matt darted past, his signature scent tickling my throat as it mixed with the flowers. He was screaming for a nurse, hoping that Vicki would stop this incessant episode.

"It was an animal attack-"

I cocked my head to the side at the words, the voice smooth as it repeated the exact lines I was going to to feed to the girl. I couldn't help the groan that escaped my lips as I leaned against the door frame, letting Stefan finish his little compelling act.

"We really need to coordinate better if we'll be working together." I told him simply, a smile tugging at my lips as he glanced up from the now calm girl. Despite the large bandage covering the wound on her throat, the metallic scent of blood still reached my nose.

Stefan glared at me, his emerald eyes filled with a bit of anger "Who said we're working together?"

I shrugged, giving an innocent look "I just figured I would compel the girl to forget, considering we're both fighting the same force here."

He scoffed, shoving past me as Vicki laid dazed, a bit aloof really. She looked content, forgetting all about the big bad that roamed Mystic Falls. "How do I know that?"

He didn't give me much of a chance to answer, hearing Matt's footsteps rushing back up the stairs with a nurse. I grasped his wrist, pushing him up against the wall with a small thud "I told you, Stefan. I'm here to protect Elena. I can't very much do that if the town is sent on another witch hunt."

Stefan continued to stare at me, weighing out his options.

"Sorry, Rowan. I work alone." He shoved me off, starting down the hallway again.
