tyler liked to watch the clouds.

there was a clearing in the forest behind his house, where the trees leaned away, reaching for other skies. the grass scratched his neck like pins, pricking his skin and drawing blood. his back was probably a map of dead strands of grass, but he couldn't bring himself to care.

above him, the clouds blew away, like white balloons, made from the sky and breaths of angels. he closed his eyes and pretended that the world was still.

a butterfly froze, and it's wings cast golden blocks of light on the ground below, the sun shining through.

a dog paused, mid bark. its heart was suddenly silent and the air dried its tongue.

the wind was quiet and the air was still.

tyler found it in him to breathe.

inhale. exhale.

nothing to it.
