Onity began as a character based off two other characters, so it would make sense to have Onity be a fusion like Garnet. He is an Ametrine, a fusion of an Amethyst and an Citrine. The difference between him and Garnet though is Onity was a fusion forced to be together, and a fusion that became stuck. He is unable to unfuse and the longer he stays as one, the more he feels like he's always been one person.
The two gems he has serve as a haunting reminder that he is not one person. He feels guilty that though he is those two gems, those two gem will never get to be themselves again.
In turn, Onity does his best to push this all aside and become someone worth life. He does what he believes is right because his beliefs are based on those gems. If he is happy, they are happy.
One of the reasons Onity falls in love with Tyler and Mike is because they treat him as one person, not a failed experiment or monster like the other homeworld gems.
Tyler is a Ruby that got cracked in fighting and refused to continue due to the fear of being shattered. Accused of being a runt and under developed and a traitor to the diamond, He ran away.
Mike is a Topaz that was friends with Tyler. Mike worked as an assistance to gems with medical like jobs, at the time watching over the forced fusion Onity. Tyler ends up convincing Mike to help him escape the diamond Authority, and Mike ends up bringing Onity along, who would probably be left to imprisonment. The three escape in a ship with no real destination in mind. They just want to get as far away as possible.
They end up landing on Earth, the only knowledge they have of it being that it used to be a colony and was a battlefield thousands of years ago. They land somewhere deserted and build a life there, hoping never to be found.
Of course they wont be at peace forever if the cluster continues to threaten the planet and the Crystal gems continue to anger the diamonds/homeworld and bring attention to Earth.
