Mortality

It's hard to believe in
This world that we live in
When innocent people die every day
And we stand idly by as they begin to decay

Why does it seem so distant
When their bodies rest beneath our feet
How can we feel so resilient
When death is a scythe and we are the wheat

We should be doing anything, everything
The storm behind our façade spirals into a hurricane

All this sadness, all this darkness
All this heartbreak, all this pain
All true love's kisses are in vain

And when I open my eyes I can see it
Spread out like a masterpiece
With all the dark colors of tragedy
And violence hidden by utopian peace

All the hearts that stop beating
All the lungs that stop breathing
All the faithfuls who stop believing

This world isn't a gentle place
Everything quickly comes and is quickly replaced
We take a step back, close our eyes, let it escalate
We try to make ourselves believe we won't meet the same fate

We're desensitized
To the death and violence just in front of our eyes
We fantasize
About the lives we'll live after death in a world free of lies

But do we know that it's there?
All our faith and hope and trust might be going nowhere
And I wish I had enough conviction to chin up and say I'm not scared
But the reality that is mortality lays my dirty soul bare

Every casualty seems a million miles away
But anyone could fall tomorrow or even today
