"Xileons and humanoids, welcome to The Pairing!"
A roar of synchronized applause bounces off the high ceiling and walls making it echo in my ears. The noise of delighted Xileons drone out my anxiety of being on such a HUGE stage and with this gigantic crowd who are all dying to see us be paired. Xileons excitedly watch as all 5 of us ladies make our way to center stage where the boys stiffly stand with some of their curious eyes examining each one of us, wondering if we could be their's.
"Tonight..." the announcer booms, signaling the audience to quiet. "These 10 youthful, brave, and magnificent human beings, the last of their kind, will be Paired with their one and only true love. Over the past 3 years, we have weighed characteristics of each NEW EARTH LEADERS that would best suit in pairs, or couples as they would be called on earth. So, without further a do... please welcome Commander Jai!"
The audience applauses as a tall middle-aged Xileon with a strong build and harsh cold blue eyes, enters on stage. He strides towards the cluster of us, caring less about his beloved Xileon crowd cheering and swooning over their leader. Commander Jai's aggressive ora sends off alarms that bounce around in my skull.
This would be the first time I have EVER seen the Commander in person or really even at all, and to be full out honest this guy's stare could shatter a rock just at a glance. I've only heard stories of the Commander from Nixon... which reminds me... where is he?
I scan the audience again to see his face one last time before I become a blank canvas in the grey and boring town, only to find an empty seat where he once sat. Fantastic. One of my most beloved best friends will just be another story to tell the young grandkids. Great.
The Commander clears his throat loud and clear, eagerly awaiting the crowd to calm before announcing the answers of The Pairing.
"Xileons, this is our first annual Pairing for our new friends, THE NEW EARTH LEADERS. Today marks the anniversary of the downfall of their planet, Earth, and how they came together as one to keep their species alive for many generations to come," Commander Jai's voice booms through the intent and eager audience."As you all know, these human beings have been through a lot and are now mature adults who are worthy to know the truth..."
My ears begin to ring ferociously when the fan-girling Xileons whistle and clap once more. The truth? What the hell does that mean? Are we going randomly learn that earth is still healthy with life and the human race, and all of us were taken for a wickedly freaky experiment? Holy crap... what if Alexa was right all a long? Could the Xileons be mind-bending carnivores wanting nothing more than to fatten us up and eat us?! No... that's not possible, because how can you explain half of a species extinction? And why would they help us carry on our species if they wanted nothing more than human food?
I look down the line to see how Aavet reacted to the Commander, but I'm forced to train my eyes back to the Commander when he begins to speak again.
Commander Jai turns on the heel of his boot and gives us all a sneaky grin before asking,"Do want the truth my alien friends?"
He waits a few moments for us to respond, but we're all in stunned shock or hesitant to know what the truth is that we just stare back at him flabbergasted.
"Well? Do you beings wish to know or not?" The crowd begins to chant with the Commander:"Tell the truth! Tell the truth!"
I turn my head back and forth between Renee and Lacy who stand beside me to see if anyone else wants to speak out or not. None of them, and honestly I'm almost to scared to say something as well. Almost.
"We all want to know sir,"I mumble looking at the Commander's blue but almost black eyes.
"What's that?" He steps forward, closer to the crowd." Did you all hear that? Jillian Rosanne Carter wants to know the truth..." He gazes over his shoulder to look back at me,"... and the truth they will receive... but of course, after The Pairing!" The lights go wild again and the music beats elegantly through the room.
A cliffhanger... wonderful.
