Then he releases me and we run back out into the open to see what the noise was about. We find everyone crowding around one of the maze doors, which was still open, Newt checks his watch,
"The doors should be closed by now," he says with worry
I frown and we barge through to the front were we find ourselves next to Ably, Minho and Thomas.
"What's happening?" I ask
"We don't know, all we know is that the shucking doors aren't closing and there will be grievers upon us within an hour," Minho replies bitterly
"We better hide," murmurs Ably "everyone to the homestead!" He announces
And with that the confused crowd of teenagers sprint to the homestead like bees to honey, just in time in fact, as the first griever enters the glade. I had gotten to the door of the already packed homestead when I realised that Newt was slowly limping behind me, with a cruel griever right on his tail, I decide to do what's best. I grab a spear that had been dropped by a fellow glader in the rampage and run towards the monster away from safety, I hear shout and swearing behind me but I don't care, my main priority is to keep Newt alive. I run past Newt and tell him to limp as fast as he can, he tries to stop me but I am too fast. I run at the creature and it flexes its metal claw as if getting ready for a fight. At the last minute I dodge it and start running the opposite direction hoping that it will follow me. The plan works, the blood-thirsty monster is behind me and had now cornered me, I see other grievers enter the glade but instead they march towards to Homestead, a wave of relief washes over me as I see Newt being pulled into the Homestead, he screams and points to me but the door shuts firmly before he can say anything. I fight with the hideous griever for what seems hours, an eternity later I see two grievers dragging a body of Gally out of the glade and back into the maze. The griever looks at me one last time and screams an ear-splitting scream that causes me to slam my hands to my ears and drop to my knees, then it trudges off into the darkness of the maze.

With the last energy I have, I wobble to the homestead like a drunk man, I bang on the door and a crack appears, then it gets bigger and bigger until I can recognise petrified faces of the gladers. They stand there motionlessly for a second, probably trying to work out if they should let me in or not. I barge past them, some mutter under their breaths, but my main goal is to make sure everyone is alive and well. Suddenly everything wakes up, light blaze through the Homestead and chaos begins, people sobbing in corners and others arguing about the griever attacks. Someone rushes past me, hitting my shoulder, I turn around at see him running towards the West door, I sprint after him and he stops just before the open doors of the maze and glances inside, thinking twice about running in there. I collapse beside him and sit on the floor, legs shaking from running, he looks down at me and offers me his hand but I swat him away and try to catch my breath. Light begins to shine upon the Glade but the sky stays a threatening, grey colour. Once it is bright enough I manage to tell apart some of the boys features and soon realise that its Thomas,

"Minho followed it out there!" he shouts and turns around to a limping Newt

A small towel is pressed against a wound on his head, a red patch already sweeping its way through the white material.

"Yeah, I saw," he huffs

Then his eyes turn to me, he doesn't say a word but I can see him relaxing a little.

I am overjoyed to see him, even if he's slightly injured, and it makes me want to smile but something stops me from doing it. I see grim, dark smoke rising from the map room, it drifts up into the already murky sky. The metal door is slightly ajar and pieces of paper and rubble sweep out of it, the smell is horrendous and toxic, could drive anyone insane. Newt then takes the towel off his head and stares at it and shrivels up his face in disgust,

"I'm going after him," says Thomas

"To be a bloody hero again?"

Thomas looks at Newt sharply and they start a small row. I slowly get up and shuffle over to the doors,

"Dont you get any ideas Amelia!" yells Newt

I put a finger to my lips, telling them to shut up. They both stop, and cock there heads to the side as if to listen out for a noise. Then I hear a familiar sound, the crunching of shoes on dirt and see Minho turning round the corner up ahead and running towards us.

"What were you doing, idiot?" shouts Thomas

Minho bends over, hands on his knees and sucks in a couple of breaths before answering. He tells us how the grievers pulled Gally to the door that we once discovered and how they disappeared into the blackness. Newt then informs them of the fire in the map room, Minho runs straight inside to see if he can find any surviving pieces of map while Thomas, all of a sudden, runs to the Slammer leaving me and Newt alone. Newt turns to me,

"You scared the bloody life out of me, Amelia!" He yells

I flinch a little, not used to a loud Newt,

"Why do you care so much?" I ask him

"Because...because I know that a life without you wouldn't be a life at all," his voice is softer this time and he softly grips my arm,

"Don't do anything like that ever again,"

"I can't make any promises," I whisper back to him

I then escort him to the medical room to have his head checked, I sit on a wooden chair by his bed has they examine his wound. He holds my hand and smiles, then slowly drifts off to sleep...
