It seemed like an eternity before the lights came back on and her mother returned.

Amelia had a troubled look on her face and her baby blue button up was stained crimson.

Lizzie's blue eyes widened. "Mom? What happened?"

Mrs. Lester swallowed and forced a smile into her face. "We have rats. They must have somehow gotten to the fuse box or something. I did my best to kill them. Killing rats is bloody work." She offered a laugh, but Lizzie could easily tell it was fake.

The entire explanation sounded overly absurd to her, but she didn't pry due to the fear in her mother's eyes.

Instead, her stomach uttered a growl and sent Lizzie to her knees. Her vision became blurry.

"Lizzie!" Amelia cried, and caught her daughter as she collapsed.
