'Oh thank U! I heart U! Oh yeah, the tutor room number is 12. Good luck.' After saying my goodbyes I sat there stunned for a moment. I was going to have to ask someone else to the prom. This sucked major. I mean who does this Sean guy thinks he is snatching my date away-- Just then I had an epiphany. Scrolling through my contacts I pulled up Laurie's number and prayed for a miracle.
'Megan has a date.' I wrote. Quickly she sent her message back.
'Cool beans!! Who is it with and what day is it?' Swallowing hard I tried to think positive. If I didn't I'd be stuck with one of the others.
'Sean Wesley. He asked her out April 23rd.' It took a minute for her to respond.
'R U kidding me? Sean Wesley!! He's yummy and-' I was in the middle of that text when she sent another.
'April 23rd! That's prom. He can't ask her she's going with you.' I could actually see her frowning in my head. I love Laurie. She was the classic definition of a Hippie Chick. I met her after I turned fifteen. It was the beginning of the school year and she was new. We all crowded around each other trying to talk about our summers when she appeared in front of me and kissed me on the lips. Leaning in she pressed her lips against my ear.
"I know your gay. But don't worry so am I. I'll keep your secret if you keep mine." Pulling back she gave me the warmest smiles. Everyone around us watched with wide eyes. Slowly I nodded my head and Laurie grinned.
"Great... well see you later boyfriend." After she left the entire crowd began to congratulate me on landing the hot new girl. After I told Megan what happened we decided that Laurie would make a great addition to our little family.
'Laurie I need U 2 do the biggest favor. I need U 2 B my date 4 prom.' After sending the text I lay my phone down. Who would have thought I'd get so nervous asking my second best girl friend to prom. Wiping my hands on my pants legs I tried to willed her answer to being yes.
'U know I was boycotting the prom.' She wrote back. Shaking my head I closed my eyes. Laurie has always been that type of girl. If she wasn't boycotting the prom she was organizing a sit in for the release of the biology animals. If it wasn't that she was harassing administration for more vegetarian lunches. It had gotten to the point she was put on the Sherriff's watch list. I was about to play my guilt card when another text came through.
'I will B Ur date on 3 conditions. 1: U buy my ticket. 2: U buy me dinner afterwards. 3 U come out the clost B4 graduation.' Was she smoking? Laurie did enjoy the occasional joint now and again. Had she fired up in class as to why she wrote that last request.
'I can do 1&2 but 3 is out of the question. Choose something else.' I was expecting a novel of an lecture about being true to myself and blah blah blah but instead all I got was this.
'Fine. I want a signed contract stating U will come out after graduation. B4 U go 2 State. U have 5 minutes 2 decide.' Glancing up at the clock I noticed class would end in five minutes. Lying my phone down I closed out all my pages for my presentation and started gathering my things.
'It's a fair deal, Declan. You can't hide in the closet your entire life. If so you'll start smelling like moth balls.' My conscious said to me. Looking back at the clock I had three minutes. Senior prom was one thing I really wanted to go to. I didn't want to mess up the experience by going with someone I didn't like. I had a minute left before I picked my phone back up and took a calming breath.
'Deal.' The send screen had just ended when the bell rung. Standing from my chair I walked to the door to feel my phone buzzing in my hand.
'Nice doing business with you.' Now that I had avoided a major catastrophe I was able to focus on the up coming third period. I sat in second period my legs impatiently jumping. I don't know why I was so anxious.
'Um... yeah you do. You want to be alone with Micah.' Said the little voice from earlier.
'No I don't. I already told you Micah is nothing but a fellow student needing my help. I'm.... I'm anxious to help him with his Chemistry.' I said to the little voice. Even as I thought the words up I knew I was lying.
'You didn't get this excited when Roland Cross needed your help in Calculus. Or remember Damien Thomas you wasn't about to jump out your chair when he needed help--' Slamming my head down I admitted defeat.
'YOU WIN!' I screamed in my head. So I was ready to be alone with Micah. What was so wrong with that?
'Because he may not feel the way you do. He may flip out like he did with Todd and send you to the hospital or worst.' Said my little voice.
"This sucks on some many levels." I muttered to myself. Mrs. Cranny turned to me and smiled.
"What did you say Declan?" Now all eyes were on me. I could feel a blush creeping forward.
"I said I can't wait until we start Gulliver's Travels." Laughing she nodded in agreement before starting back with the class. Now that I'd admitted my desire to see and be with Micah time had sped up. By the time the bell rung I was a nervous wreck.
'I know it's difficult but you need to man up.' I hated when Megan gave me sound advice. Packing my bag I headed for my locker. After getting what I need I started for the library. I could hear the theme song from Rocky in my head as my inner me cheered me on. I could do this. I was not going to let this control me.
By the time I got the tutoring room I'd made up my mind I wasn't going to let some silly little crush rule me. When I opened the door and saw Micah sitting there all that went out the window. Turning to me he smiled warmly and motioned for me to come inside. Stumbling over my feet I went in and closed the door.
"I thought maybe you'd changed your mind." He said pulling out my chair slightly. I forced a smiled on my face and tried to draw in as much oxygen as I could.
"Wild horses could have dragged me away." I said. I inner self smacked it's forehead.
'You big dummy. Why don't you wear a sign saying I love you Micah Phillips.' Taking the seat I pulled out my Chemistry book.
"Let's get started."
